OMAHA, Neb.– The Oklahoma volleyball team secured their third victory in a row with a 3-1 (20-25, 25-13, 25-19, 25-14) victory over the University of Nebraska at Omaha Saturday afternoon inside Baxter Arena. OU improved to 3-1 on the year while Omaha fell to 0-5.
Junior
Alexis Shelton led all players with 18 kills. Graduate transfer
Kari Geissberger notched 11, while
Daleigh Ellison added nine and
Lydia Martyn chipped in seven.
Senior setter
Payton Chamberlain recorded 33 assists and and added eight digs. Senior libero
Callie Kemohah chipped in nine digs and eight assists. Freshman
Jasmine Ellison added eight digs of her own, with Shelton notching six.
Defensively, the Sooners recorded 12.0 blocks with
Kelli Jo Burgess leading the way with eight to tie her career high and Shelton chipping in four.
The Mavericks led 15-13 at the first timeout of the set and pushed their lead to 20-15. The Sooners used a 5-1 run to pull within one at 21-20 but dropped the first set 25-20.
OU took a quick 5-1 lead in the second set to force an Omaha timeout. Out of the timeout, the Mavericks used a run of their own to tie the set at 6-all. With the match tied at 10-10, the Sooners used a 10-1 run to take a 20-11 lead. OU closed out the set on a 5-2 run to take the set 25-13.
The teams traded points for most of the third set, with neither side able to establish a clear advantage. OU took a 21-16 lead late for their largest lead of the set. Omaha staved off a pair of set points, but Shelton's 14
th kill of the day clinched the third set, 25-19 and the 2-1 match advantage.
In the final set, the Sooners jumped out to an early 6-1 lead, capitalizing on errors by the Mavericks. Omaha pulled within two at 8-6, but a 7-2 run from Oklahoma pushed the lead out to seven. The Sooners controlled the remainder of the set with an
Daleigh Ellison kill locking in the 25-14 win.
The Sooners will travel to Tulsa for their next weekend of non-conference play. OU will face Stephen F. Austin on Thursday, Sept. 12 and face Tulsa on Friday, Sept. 13.
