Summy Ties School Record, OU Leads at Valero Texas Collegiate
September 21, 2024 | Men's Golf
SAN ANTONIO – Jase Summy matched a school record, firing a 10-under 62 as No. 8 Oklahoma men's golf posted the seventh-lowest round in OU history, a 20-under 268, to take the 18-hole lead at the Valero Texas Collegiate on Saturday.
Summy's bogey-free 62 (-10) tied Patrick Welch's OU record as the junior from Keller, Texas, holds a four-shot lead at the 54-hole event held at TPC San Antonio. The tournament's winner receives an exemption into the 2025 Valero Texas Open on the PGA Tour.
As a team, the Sooners (1, -20) lead No. 10 Ole Miss by five shots entering Sunday's second round. Further down the leaderboard, No. 1 Auburn is in third place and eight back of OU, while No. 5 Virginia and No. 6 Vanderbilt are T4 and 11 back of Oklahoma. The Sooners lead No. 11 Tennessee (T7, -6) by 14 shots.
Summy (1, -10) opened his day with back-to-back birdies and posted six birdies on the front nine. Four more under-par holes on the back, paired with zero bogeys, placed the Sooner in elite company with Welch as one of two Sooners to card a school-record 62 (-10). The junior seeks his second career win as he found the winner's circle at the 2023 Boilermaker Invitational.
Drew Goodman (T4, -5) also fired a bogey-free opening round, signing for a 5-under 67 at the par-72, 7,034-yard course. His back-to-back birdies to close his round moved him into a tie for fourth, five back of Summy's lead.
Matthew Troutman (T9, -3) tallied bogeys on the second and fourth hole but rattled off five birdies down the stretch as the junior sits in a tie for ninth at 3-under par.
Sophomore Ryder Cowan (T23, -2) carded a team-high 14 pars and is 2-under after 18 holes.
Playing unattached from the lineup, true freshman Clark Van Gaalen (T69, +3) fired a 75. PJ Maybank III made his season debut and is tied for 81st after posting a 5-over 77.
The Sooners, who finished T3 at the season-opening Inverness Intercollegiate last week, will tee off in Sunday's second round beginning at 9:40 a.m. CT with the Rebels (2, -15) and Tigers (3, -12).
