Six Sooners Set for 124th U.S. Amateur

CHASKA, Minn. — A school-record six Oklahoma golfers are set to tee off in the 124th United States Amateur this week at Hazeltine National Golf Club in Minnesota as Stephen Campbell Jr., Ryder Cowan, Jaxon Dowell, Drew Goodman, PJ Maybank III and Jase Summy will all vie for the historic Havemeyer Trophy.
The premier amateur golf event of the summer tees off on Monday morning as 312 of the best amateur golfers in the world open stroke play. Golfers will play 18 holes on Monday and another 18 holes on Tuesday before the field is trimmed to 64. Beginning on Wednesday, a 64-player match-play bracket begins, culminating with a 36-hole final match on Sunday. Golfers will also play a round out Chaska Town Course during stroke play.
Campbell Jr., Goodman, and Summy secured their spots in the event based on their positions in the World Amateur Golf Rankings (WAGR), while Cowan, Dowell, and Maybank III qualified through local qualifiers. The six Sooners competing in the U.S. Amateur tie the school record set in 2020 for the most OU golfers ever to participate in the tournament.
This year, the U.S. Amateur returns to Hazeltine for only the second time. The renowned course has a storied history, having previously hosted the U.S. Open twice (in 1970 and 1991), the PGA Championship twice (in 2002 and 2009), and the Ryder Cup once (in 2016).
Peacock and the Golf Channel will share coverage for the first three days of match play, with Golf Channel piloting coverage of the semifinals and 36-hole championship match.
The University of Oklahoma's golf facility's namesake, Charlie Coe, was a two-time U.S. Amateur winner and appeared in 19 Masters Tournaments, and is widely considered the best amateur golfer in Masters history.
The event's winner receives an exemption into the 2025 U.S. Open at Oakmont Country Club, the 2025 Open Championship at Royal Portrush, and a likely invitation to the 2025 Masters Tournament.
