Jase Summy, Big 12, lead

Jase Summy in Fourth at Halfway Point of NCAA Championship

May 25, 2024 | Men's Golf

CARLSBAD, Calif.Jase Summy is tied for fourth as Oklahoma remained alone in 19th at the midway point of the NCAA Championship on Saturday.

The Sooners (19, +27) carded a 14-over 302 in the second round at the par-72, 7,538-yard Omni La Costa North Course and will enter Sunday's third round seven shots back of the 54-hole cut and 15 strokes off Monday's final cut to eight teams.

Summy (T4, -1) fired a 1-under 71 on Saturday and is one of just seven golfers in the red at La Costa. The sophomore is one back of second place as the field is chasing Stanford's Karl Vilips, the only golfer to post back-to-back rounds in the 60s, at 7-under. Summy once again started his day strong, posting a trio of birdies on the front nine before a 2-over back moved him from second to fourth on the leaderboard.

Oklahoma has produced eight top-five individual finishers at the national championship, most recently in 2022 when Chris Gotterup earned fifth. At the 2023 championship, Summy was one of two Sooners to play in Monday's final round.

After Sunday's third round, the field will be cut from 30 teams to 15, with ties broken by cumulative drop score. The remaining 15 teams will tee off Monday in the final round of stroke play, where an individual national champion will be crowned. The top nine individuals on a non-advancing team will play in Monday's final round.

Following Monday's final round, the field is narrowed to eight teams, each qualifying for match play. Historically, there have been 22 teams that have entered the third round seven strokes behind the 54-hole cut and made the championship's first cut, while only four of them have qualified for match play the following day.

On Saturday, the ninth-seeded Sooners teed off in the morning wave and opened the day strong, playing the first four holes 2-under par, moving the Crimson and Cream up the leaderboard. When OU made the turn, Summy was alone in third, and OU had risen to 15th as a team. But it was a challenging back nine that caught up with the Sooners as OU played the final nine holes 13-over to post a 14-over 302 score.

Ben Lorenz (T91, +8) was OU's second-low finisher of the day, carding a 2-over 74. The All-American is battling for PGA TOUR U points and sits 13th in the latest rankings, and will lock up membership on PGA TOUR Americas if he finishes the tournament.

Drew Goodman (T109, +10) posted a 76 (+4) on Saturday and shares 109th in the 150-plus-player field.

Oklahoma's true freshmen PJ Maybank III (SUB, +9), who subbed in for Luke Kluver on Saturday, and Ryder Cowan (T117, +11) shot 81 and 82, respectively, in the second round.

Virginia leads the team race at 1-over par, followed by Illinois (+4), Vanderbilt (+7), Auburn (+10) and North Carolina (+11) to round out the top five. Ohio State, Arizona and Florida State share sixth and complete the top eight at 12-over.

The Sooners will look for a big round on Sunday to get within striking distance of the match-play cut as they tee off at 2:22 p.m. CT off the 10th tee with North Florida and Utah.

Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.
