Sooners Prepped to Host NCAA Regionals

NORMAN – The No. 11 Oklahoma men's tennis team is set to host the 2024 NCAA Norman Regional at the Headington Family Tennis Center May 3-4.
The Sooners will open the tournament with UT Arlington, while SMU and Stanford will square off in the other first round match. The winners of the first-round matchups meet Saturday, May 4, with the winner advancing to super regional competition the following weekend.
Friday's competition against UTA will be the second meeting of the season between the two teams. OU swept the Mavericks in the second weekend of the season in front of a home crowd.
REGULAR SEASON RECAP

The Sooners completed the regular season with a 20-4 overall record and a 8-2 record in Big 12 play.

Oklahoma only dropped one match on their home courts all season, for a 13-1 home record.

The Sooners notched nine ranked wins in the regular season: No. 57 Cornell, No. 14 San Diego, No. 33 VCU, No. 34 Middle Tennessee, No. 3 TCU, No. 29 UCF, No. 8 Texas A&M, No. 31 Baylor and No. 33 OSU.

OU made it to the semifinals of the Big 12 Championship after sweeping Texas Tech in the quarterfinals.

The Sooners dropped the semifinal match to No. 3 TCU, 4-1.

The Sooners will compete in their 14th consecutive NCAA Tournament.

OU has advanced past the second round each of the last 10 seasons.

Oklahoma is hosting the opening rounds of the tournament for the first time since 2018.
WHERE THEY RANK

Fifth-year senior Alex Martinez holds steady at No, 10 in the most recent ITA rankings (May 2).

Freshman Kholo Montsi has a singles ranking of No. 69.

Fifth-year senior pair Martinez and Baptiste Anselmo checked into the ITA doubles rankings at No. 58.
RECAPPING THE OPPONENTS
SMU is currently ranked No. 44 in the nation and has a 17-10 record on the season. The Mustangs have two players in the ITA singles rankings with Trevor Svajda at No. 41 and Adam Neff at No. 114. Huntley Allen and Adam Neff are ranked No. 25 in the ITA doubles rankings.
No. 19 Stanford comes to Norman with two players ranked in singles with Nishesh Basavareddy at the No. 16 position and Samir Banerjee at No. 55. Stanford also has two doubles teams ranked with Max Basing and Nicholas Godsick at No. 62 and Samir Banerjee and Nishesh Basavareddy at the No. 85 position. The team has a 17-6 record this season.
UTA does not currently hold a team or doubles ranking but has Joan Torres Espinosa at No. 110 in the ITA singles rankings. The Mavericks are 12-7 on the season and currency have a seven-match win streak.
TOURNAMENT DETAILS
The opening round of the NCAA Regional will take place on Friday, May 3 with SMU and Stanford facing off at 10 a.m. followed by Oklahoma and UTA's match at 1 p.m.
Each of the weekend's matches can be followed through live stream and live stats.
Tickets for the NCAA Regional tournament are $5 for daily general admission and groups of 10 or more can purchase tickets for $3 in advance. Tickets can be purchased here. Students arriving early for the matches both days will be admitted free of charge with an OU ID.
The winners of each match will advance to the second round on Saturday, May 4 at 1 p.m. The winning team in Saturday's match will advance to super regionals, scheduled for May 10-11.
