Sooners Within Striking Distance at Big 12 Championship
April 22, 2024 | Men's Golf
TRINITY, Texas — The Oklahoma men's golf team rallied in the afternoon wave at Whispering Pines Golf Club to make up substantial ground and get back in the mix for the title at the 2024 Big 12 Men's Golf Championship, wrapping up day one in a tie for fifth.
After Monday's 36-hole day, the Sooners (T5, +6) trail leaders BYU (1, -1) by seven shots with 36 holes to play in the five-count-four formatted championship. Oklahoma is one of six teams within seven shots of the Cougars. Four different Sooners are tied for 20th at 2-over par as BYU's Peter Kim and Cincinnati's Ty Gingerich share the individual lead at 5-under par.
Oklahoma has won back-to-back Big 12 titles and four overall since the league was formed. In 2022, Oklahoma erased a four-shot deficit over the final four holes to win the title at Whispering Pines.
Head coach Ryan Hybl's team struggled out of the gates at the 72-hole championship, making the round one turn at 3-over par, placing them in 14th early at the event. A tough back nine pushed the Sooners further away from the lead as OU signed for an 8-over 296 in the first round, 13 shots back of BYU after 18 holes. After the morning session, true freshman Ryder Cowan led the Crimson and Cream contingent at 1-under par and in a tie for 10th.
A hot start to the afternoon wave jump-started the Sooners as Drew Goodman birdied the 10th, OU's first hole of the second round. A Jase Summy eagle and Ben Lorenz birdie on the 12th pushed the Sooners closer to par as the rest of the field fell off. Oklahoma got within three shots around the turn, but a trio of bogeys down the stretch of the second round pushed Oklahoma to 6-over on the day after carding a 2-under 286 in the afternoon.
The Sooners' 286 (-2) was the second-lowest round of the afternoon, behind only Oklahoma State's (3, +3) 284, which moved the Cowboys into contention at the Pines.
Goodman (T20, +2) posted a 5-over 77 in the first round on Monday morning but responded with a 69 (-3) to share 19th heading into the third round.
Jase Summy (T20, +2) had a similar fate at Whispering Pines on Monday, tallying a 76 (+4) in the morning before battling back with a 2-under 70 to match Goodman in 19th.
Joining Goodman and Summy in 20th, Stephen Campbell Jr. fired rounds of 74-72, and Cowan carded 71-75. Cowan led all players with 28 pars, but the highlight of his day came when the freshman holed out for birdie from a bunker just off the ninth green in round one.
Ben Lorenz wrapped up OU's lineup with a 75 (+3) and 76 (+4) and is 48th.
As a team, Oklahoma led the field with 119 pars, three more than the championship-leading Cougars, but the Sooners finished with just 26 birdies, 11th in the 14-team field.
The Sooners will look to close the gap in Tuesday's third round when they tee off with Baylor and Houston at 8:40 a.m. CT.
Tuesday's third round will be followed by one final round on Wednesday morning, streamed on ESPN+. Live scoring for the remainder of the championship will be carried by Golfstat.
On Wednesday, the team champion will receive the league's automatic selection into the NCAA Division I Men's Golf Championship. If not selected on a participating team, the conference's medalist will receive an automatic invitation to NCAA Regionals. The top-10 finishers, including ties, will be named to the Big 12 All-Tournament Team.
The full NCAA field, including selections and regional site locations, will be announced on Wednesday, May 1 at 2 p.m. on Golf Channel.
