March 18, 2024 | Men's Golf
SAN DIEGO – It took the lowest round of the afternoon wave, a 9-under 275, but after the opening, 36-hole day at the Pauma Valley Invitational in San Diego, the 10th-ranked Sooners are tied for third and within striking distance of team and individual titles.
The Sooners (T3, -6) enter Tuesday's final round nine back of No. 3 Vanderbilt, as head coach Ryan Hybl's team made up four shots in Monday's second round. True freshman Ryder Cowan and All-American Ben Lorenz, who share sixth and are five back of the individual lead, paced the Sooners.
Teams battled brutal weather conditions in the morning as multiple storms passed through the par-71, 7,311-yard Pauma Valley Country Club. Oklahoma struggled early, playing most of the first round well over par before six birdies across the lineup's last five holes pushed the Crimson and Cream back to 3-over par and a tie for sixth after 18 holes.
With the rain clear from the area, the Sooners caught fire in the afternoon. Oklahoma played the second round's front nine at 6-under par and then closed strong with an eagle from Lorenz and a birdie from Cowan, powering OU into third as it heads to Tuesday's final stretch.
Lorenz's clean card, a 4-under 67 in the second round, moved the Peoria, Ariz., product into sixth place. His strong afternoon showing was paired with a 1-over 72 in the first round. The senior rallied in the second round to a pair of birdies, an eagle, and 15 pars.
Cowan (T6, -3) is in line for his best career finish. The freshman carded 71-68 to share sixth after 36 holes. The freshman sunk four birdies in each round, and just one bogey in the second round moved him into contention at Pauma Valley.
Haskins Award watch listee Luke Kluver signed for a 71 (E) in the morning and a 70 (-1) later in the day to sit in 18th. Drew Goodman (T39, +2) used a 1-under 70 in the second round to move up the leaderboard.
Playing unattached, Stephen Campbell Jr. (T30, +1) posted his seventh round in the 60s this season on Monday, carding 74-69 as the Richmond, Texas, product will have a look at his fourth top-20 finish of the year tomorrow. Sophomore Jase Summy posted matching 73s (+2) and shares 50th to round out the OU contingent.
One group did not finish due to darkness, and final tee times will begin at 9:40 a.m. CT on Tuesday. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.
