Strong Finish Puts Sooners in Hunt in Las Vegas
February 25, 2024 | Men's Golf
LAS VEGAS – The Oklahoma men's golf team closed round one strong at the Southern Highlands Collegiate on Sunday, using a string of late birdies to surge into T7 and just six back of the lead.
The 15th-ranked Sooners' four counting scores played the final three holes 8-under par to send Oklahoma into the red with a 284 (-4) at the par-72 Southern Highlands Golf Club in Las Vegas.
The Sooners (T7, -4) were 5-over through two holes and 6-over par after six, but a Ryder Cowan birdie on the ninth, followed by birdies from Jaxon Dowell and Ryder Cowan on the 10th, turned the momentum for Oklahoma. The Sooners battled to get back to 4-over par heading to the 16th, where the entire counting lineup birdied the par-4 16th hole. Drew Goodman and Dowell birdied the 17th, while Jase Summy and Dowell closed with birdies to push the Sooners to 4-under.
Drew Goodman birdied three of his last four to pace the Sooners with a 70 (-2). The junior from Norman, Okla., has now posted an even-par-or-better round in his previous seven rounds and in 13 of his 16 rounds this season. Goodman's strong finish pushed him into a tie for 15th with 36 holes to play.
Missouri's Jack Lundin leads the field after signing for a 66 (-6), while Florida's 278 (-10) paced the team race.
Jaxon Dowell and Jase Summy fired matching 71s to finish in the red at 1-under as the two share 24th after day one in the desert. True freshman Ryder Cowan (T36, E) responded well after an opening-hole triple-bogey, playing the rest of his round 3-under par to get back to even and count a score for Oklahoma.
Ben Lorenz posted a 1-over par 73 and shares 45th. Lorenz was 1-under through 14, but a double bogey on the 17th was pivotal on Sunday.
Oklahoma tees off at 11 a.m. CT with Texas and New Mexico in Monday's second round.
