Jaxon Dowell Selected as SEC Men's Golfer of the Week
November 06, 2024 | Men's Golf
NORMAN – Oklahoma men's golf senior Jaxon Dowell became the program's first SEC Golfer of the Week on Wednesday, marking a historic achievement as the Sooners are in their inaugural season in the Southeastern Conference.
The award is Dowell's first career weekly honor and follows his impressive victory at the Ka'anapali Classic, where he capped a strong fall season with first collegiate win. The accolade made Dowell Oklahoma's first weekly or monthly honoree since Ben Lorenz was named Big 12 Golfer of the Month in March 2023.
Dowell dominated the Ka'anapali Classic at the par-71 Royal Ka'anapali Golf Club in Lahaina, Hawai'i, last weekend, firing rounds of 63-66-67. His opening-round 63 not only secured the 18-hole lead but also set a new career low for the redshirt senior from Edmond, Okla. Dowell was tied with teammate Clark Van Gaalen at 16-under on the final hole, where he sank a long birdie putt to clinch his first career victory. His 17-under final score ranks as the sixth-lowest 54-hole score in program history.
Over his Oklahoma career, Dowell has competed in 17 events, maintaining a -0.33 score vs. par, the third-best in program history among qualifying golfers.
The Sooners, who rose to No. 1 in national rankings and ended the fall ranked fourth, will resume play on Feb. 10 at the Puerto Rico Classic.
