Oklahoma Grows Lead in Round Two at Ka'anapali Classic

MAUI, Hawaii – When the field tees off in Monday's final round of the Ka'anapali Classic, Oklahoma men's golf will do so with a five-shot lead after the Sooners fired an 11-under 273 on Sunday.
Five Oklahoma (1, -33) golfers, including three in the OU lineup, are inside the top 11 of the individual race, while Jaxon Dowell (-13) leads the field and will seek the first win of his college career at the par-71 Royal Ka'anapali Golf Club.
The Sooners opened on the front nine in a shotgun start as the Oklahoma starting five posted a -13 mark through nine holes to maintain its opening-round lead. A 2-over back narrowed the gap, but the Sooners still hold a five-shot lead over Indiana and Kansas, who share second. North Florida (-25) sits in solo fourth, while Colorado (-24) rounds out the top five after 36 holes.
Dowell (1, -13) is playing unattached from the Oklahoma lineup but carded a 66 (-5) to secure the best 36-hole start of his career and build a two-shot lead at the event. The Edmond, Okla., product posted seven birdies on Sunday to remain in front.
Oklahoma's first name in the lineup on the leaderboard is Jase Summy (3, -10), whose 67 (-4) moved him up from fifth to third place in the individual race.
The star of the day was true freshman Asher Whitaker (T6, -9), who fired a 7-under 64, moving up 32 spots on the leaderboard into a tie for sixth with fellow freshman teammate Clark Van Gaalen. Whitaker posted six birdies, an eagle and one bogey on Sunday to get into contention.
Van Gaalen (T6, -9) was strong for the second consecutive round, playing unattached from the team. His bogey-free 66 (-5) moved him from 18th to sixth in Hawai'i as the freshman seeks his first career top-10 finish.
Matthew Troutman (T11, -7) and Ryder Cowan (T24, -5) both signed for even par 71s, while PJ Maybank III (T80, +1) tallied a 1-over 73.
The Sooners have won the Ka'anapali Classic four times since 2015, including in back-to-back seasons. Head coach Ryan Hybl's team will look to close its fall slate with a win on Monday afternoon as the Sooners tee off at 12:30 p.m. CT.
