MAUI, Hawaii – All five Sooners in the lineup played under par as No. 2 Oklahoma men's golf leads the Ka'anapali Classic after 18 holes.
The Sooners (1, -20) fired the seventh-lowest round vs. par in program history at the par-71 Royal Ka'anapali Golf Club to jump in front of the 21-team field at the 54-hole event on Saturday. Senior golfer
Jaxon Dowell leads the individual race at 8-under par and is playing unattached from the OU lineup.
The Sooners have won the event four times, including in each of the last two seasons.
Head coach
Ryan Hybl's team was on fire early after all OU golfers started on the front nine in a shotgun start. The Sooners made the turn alone in first place after OU's four counting scores all fired 33 (-4) on the front. The back nine featured more pars for the Crimson and Cream as three of the four played the final nine holes in the red as Oklahoma pushed its score to 20-under and two shots in front of North Florida and four ahead of No. 5 LSU and Indiana, while Kansas (-15) rounds out the top five.
Dowell (1, -8) played the best round of his college career on Saturday, carding a career-low 63 with one bogey. After starting the 17th, Dowell tallied his first bogey on No. 1 before rattling off two more birdies and an eagle over his next nine holes. His stretch around the turn featured an eagle on the ninth and back-to-back-to-back birdies on Nos. 10-12. A bogey on the 15th pushed Dowell off a tie for the program's lowest-ever round, but the Edmond, Okla., product still maintains a one-shot lead entering Sunday's round.
In the Oklahoma lineup, three Sooners sit inside the top 10.
Matthew Troutman (T2, -7), fresh off a T4 finish at the Stephens Cup, sits one shot behind Dowell in a tie for second. The junior started on No. 1 with a bogey and played his first 12 holes 7-under before signing for six pars to close his day. His 64 (-7) set a career low when playing in the Oklahoma starting five.
Jase Summy (T5, -6) returned to form, carding a 65 with one bogey on Saturday to grab a share of fifth with 36 holes to play. The Keller, Texas, native seeks his second top-five of the season at Ka'anapali.
Sophomore
Ryder Cowan (10, -5) will enter Sunday one shot behind Summy and three shots of Dowell's lead after posting a 66 (-5).
Asher Whitaker made his college debut on Saturday, carding a 69 (-2) counting score for the Sooners to share 38th.
PJ Maybank III rounded out the Oklahoma contingent, registering a 70 (-1) to sit 53rd.
Freshman
Clark Van Gaalen is T18 at 4-under par and unattached from the OU lineup.
The Sooners will look to build their lead in Sunday's second round when they tee off at 12:30 p.m. CT. Scoreboard by Clippd will carry live scoring of the event.
