NORMAN - The No. 18 Oklahoma wrestling team fell to No. 4Ā Iowa State, 37-4Ā inside McCasland Field House on Friday night.Ā
One Sooner picked up a win in the contest. At 197Ā pounds, senior Stephen Buchanan remained undefeated on the seasonĀ after cruising to aĀ 19-5 major decision over ISU's Caleb Helgeson. In the first period, BuchananĀ scored a takedownĀ to take a 3-0Ā lead into the second. The Loyal, Wisc., native added another takedown in the middle period, but HelgesonĀ earned twoĀ escapes to stay within striking distance atĀ 6-2. Buchanan responded by dominatingĀ the final period, adding three more takedowns, a reversal and riding timeĀ to close out the bout.
With the victory, Buchanan movedĀ to a perfect 17-0 on the season.Ā
Seven Cyclones secured bonus-point victories, helping Iowa StateĀ improve their record to 10-1 overall and 3-0 in Big 12 action while OklahomaĀ fell to 5-4 overall and 2-3 in league duals.
In the 125 poundĀ bout, Conrad HendriksenĀ fell short againstĀ ISU's No. 25 Kysen Terukina in sudden victory, 4-1. At 133, Jace KoelzerĀ droppedĀ to No. 7Ā Evan FrostĀ inĀ a 12-2 major decision.Ā
The run of ranked Cyclones picking up wins continued, as OU's Kaden Smith was defeated by No. 8 Anthony Echemendia via 23-7Ā tech fall before No. 32 Willie McDougald fell to No. 10 Casey Swiderski 8-3.Ā
No. 31 Jared Hill wrestled a tightĀ match at 157 poundsĀ but was ultimately defeated by ISU's Jason Kraisser 2-0. In the 165-pound bout, Mannix Morgan made his dual debut for the Sooners, losing by way of a 21-3 tech fall to No. 3 David Carr.Ā
In a battle of top-30 opponents, No. 29 Tate Picklo carried a 6-2 lead into the second period of the 174-pound bout before getting pinned by No. 23 MJ GaitanĀ at 3:13. AtĀ 184, OU's Giuseppe Hoose lost his matchĀ to No. 10 Will FeldkampĀ in a 14-6 major decision.Ā
The final bout of the night pitted twoĀ top Big 12 heavyweight contenders against each other, as OU's No. 11 Josh Heindselman and ISU's No. 3 Yonger BastidaĀ took the mat. The result ended in Bastida picking up his 16thĀ consecutive win to open the season, topping HeindselmanĀ for aĀ 14-4 major decision.Ā
OU prepares for a quick one-day turnaroundĀ as No.Ā 22Ā Northern Iowa makes their way to McCaslandĀ Field House on Saturday for a 7 p.m.Ā dualĀ against the Sooners. The top-25 matchup will be broadcasted on ESPN+. Live stats will be provided throughĀ TrackWrestling.Ā
