NORMAN – The Oklahoma volleyball team fell to No. 9 Texas in three sets, 28-26, 25-18, 30-28, Friday night inside McCasland Field House.
The Sooners celebrated a record with 695 students in attendance, breaking the former student attendance record of 633 set against Texas in 2018.
Hannah Pfiffner recorded a career high with 10 kills, hitting .316 in the match. Six of her 10 kills came in the third set as she hit at a .625 clip. Alexis Shelton led all Sooners with 15 kills, hitting .310 in the match. Taylor Preston added 12 kills and two blocks.
Payton Chamberlain dished out 35 assists and was a dig shy of a double-double with nine. Callie Kemohah finished with nine digs, whole Chloe Kaminski chipped in eight and Mele Corral-Blagojevich added six.
The Longhorns took set one, 28-26. The Sooners rallied from an early deficit and had set point twice at 24-23 and 25-24. OU managed to hold off Texas' set point at 26-25, but back-to-back Sooner errors gave the Longhorns the set.
The Sooners pulled even with the Longhorns early in the second on an ace from Payton Chamberlain. Texas used a 6-1 run to pull ahead 11-6 and remained in control of the set to take the win, 25-18.
In the third, OU jumped out to an 11-7 lead before Texas pulled even at 14-14. Pfiffner tied the set at 19-19 and the Sooners retook the lead, 21-19 late. The teams traded six set point opportunities with Texas taking the set 30-28.
The Sooners and Longhorns will close out the opening weekend of conference play tomorrow at 6 p.m. CT.
