NORMAN — Oklahoma linebacker Danny Stutsman was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week after his performance in OU's 28-11 win over SMU on Saturday, the league office announced Monday.
Ā
The junior from Windermere, Fla., totaled 17 tackles, 2.5 tackles for loss, a fumble recovery and a QB hurry. He finished one tackle shy of his career high and notched his first career fumble recovery on a third-quarter play in OU territory. Stutsman keyed a Sooners defense that limited the Mustangs to 367 yards (last year they averaged 473 ypg) and 4.6 yards per play (last year they averaged 6.1 ypp). OU also held the Mustangs to a combined 6-for-20 performance on third and fourth downs and limited them to their lowest point total since 2017.

Stutsman was named the Walter Camp FBS National Defensive Player of the Week on Sunday. He was an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection in 2022 when he led the Big 12 with 125 total tackles and ranked 18th nationally with his 9.6 tackles per game.
Ā
This is Stutsman's first Big 12 weekly honor, and OU's second of the season. Sophomore Gavin Freeman was named the Big 12 Co-Special Teams Player of the Week on Sept. 4.

No. 19/16 Oklahoma (2-0) finishes regular season non-conference play when it travels to face Tulsa (1-1) on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The game will be televised by ESPN2.
