NORMAN — University of Oklahoma junior linebacker Danny Stutsman was named the Walter Camp FBS National Defensive Player of the Week on Sunday for his performance in OU's win over SMU on Saturday.
Stutsman, from Windermere, Fla., registered 17 tackles (one shy of his career high), 2.5 tackles for loss, a sack, a QB hurry and a fumble recovery in OU territory to help the Sooners to a 28-11 home victory. He keyed a Sooners defense that limited the Mustangs to 367 yards (last year they averaged 473 ypg) and 4.6 yards per play (last year they averaged 6.1 ypp). OU also held the Mustangs to a combined 6-for-20 performance on third and fourth downs.
Stutsman was an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection in 2022 when he led the Big 12 with 125 total tackles and ranked 18th nationally with his 9.6 tackles per game.
This marks the 11th time an Oklahoma player has earned Walter Camp National Player of the Week honors since 2004. Stutsman is the first OU defensive player-of-the-week honoree since linebacker Kenneth Murray on Sept. 23, 2018.
Oklahoma (2-0) finishes regular season non-conference play when it travels to face Tulsa on Saturday at 2:30 p.m. The game will be televised by ESPN2.
