Four Sooners Earn PING All-Region Honors

May 27, 2023 | Men's Golf

NORMAN – Four OU golfers have been named to the Ping All-Region team for the Central Region for the second consecutive season, placing them one step closer to All-America status, the Golf Coaches Association of America announced Saturday.

Drew Goodman, Ben Lorenz, Jase Summy and Patrick Welch comprise the Sooner contingent on the All-Region team as OU now has 20 selections over the last five years, surpassing all other teams in the region during that time.

Goodman earned his second consecutive selection to the All-Region team as the sophomore has continued to set records in the Crimson and Cream. The Norman product earned an All-America honorable mention last season and was named a first-team All-Freshman selection. In 2023, he owns a 70.03 scoring average, and his career average of 70.67 is an OU record. In addition, his five top five-finishes lead the team, as do his seven top 20s.

Lorenz has burst onto the scene in the spring season, earning a top-10 finish in five of his six appearances, including a win at The Goodwin. A sixth-place finish at the Big 12 Championship placed him on the conference's All-Tournament team, and he finished in third at the NCAA Norman Regional. His season scoring average of 69.68 would be the fourth lowest in school history if it held.

Summy, a freshman from Keller, Texas, has been sensational in his first season as a Sooner. He is on track to break Goodman's freshman program records for single-season scoring and birdies. In addition, Summy has accumulated three top-five finishes, winning the Boilermaker Invitational to close the regular season.

Welch becomes the first five-time All-Region selection in program history as he looks to join Quade Cummins as a four-time All-America honoree. The redshirt senior finished fourth at the Big 12 Championship to garner his third All-Tournament team selection. He has posted eight top-20 finishes in 10 tournaments this season.

The four continue their play at the NCAA Championship this weekend, where No. 10 Oklahoma is looking to advance to its seventh consecutive match play appearance.
