Turner Named Big 12 Performer of the Year

May 18, 2023 | Track and Field

NORMAN - University of Oklahoma track and field redshirt senior Vernon TurnerĀ was named the Big 12 Men's Performer of the Year, the conference announced Thursday.

Turner is the secondĀ Oklahoma track and field athlete to earn the honorĀ in the outdoor season, with Mookie Salaam claiming the honor in 2011.

"We are so excited and proud of Vernon for his accomplishments," said OU head coach Tim Langford. "He has led our program throughout his career and to receiveĀ this honor in his senior season is such a fitting end to his storied career in the Big 12."

At the Big 12 Championships, Turner made a statement with his fifth career Big 12 conference title in men's high jump and went back-to-back with conference titles for indoors and outdoors in a single season (2022, 2023). Turner has won three outdoor conference titles (2018, 2022, 2023) and two indoor (2022, 2023). He cleared 7-6.50 (2.30m) to match the best-mark in program history, last set by Turner himself in 2022, and is the national leader and No. 4 in the world.

Turner and the Sooners wait to find out which student-athletes qualify to compete at the NCAA West Regionals in Sacramento, Calif., May 24-27.
