Coleman, Bahl Lead Sooners to Series Clincher

April 07, 2023 | Softball

NORMAN — No. 1 Oklahoma cruised past Texas Tech 6-0 in game two of the three-game Big 12 series to clinch OU's 51st consecutive conference series.

The Sooners (35-1, 8-0) were powered by a two-homer showing from Jayda Coleman, the junior's second career multi-home run game and first since her freshman season in 2021 (2 vs. Missouri, 3/7/21).

In the circle, Jordy Bahl twirled a gem, earning the win in 6.1 innings pitched and striking out a season-high 12 with just one hit and one walk. Bahl gave way to freshman Kierston Deal in the seventh who completed the shutout, OU's fifth straight of Texas Tech (28-14, 2-6) dating back to last season and nation-leading 21st of 2023.

After Bahl surrendered a leadoff single and a walk in the first, she proceeded to retire 14 straight Red Raider batters into the sixth inning.

In the bottom of the first, Coleman blasted her first round-tripper on a solo shot to left field to put OU on top through one.

OU pulled away in the third with five runs on three hits and a Tech error. Following a walk to Rylie Boone, Coleman sent a no-doubt, two-run blast out of the park for her second of the day and 11th of the season, good for the team lead. Three batters later after a walk to Tiare Jennings, single from Haley Lee and hit by pitch to Alyssa Brito, Kinzie Hansen laced a single through the right side to plate a pair. The next play, Hansen and Brito successfully executed a double steal with Brito racing home for OU's sixth run of the contest.

A scoreless final three innings ensued with Bahl continuing to deal, retiring the side in the sixth and striking out the first batter of the seventh before giving way to Deal. The frosh lefty stranded a pair with a strikeout looking to seal the shutout and OU's 27th straight victory.

Coleman paced OU with a 2-for-4, two home run, three RBI showing, while Hansen brought in a pair in a 1-for-2 performance.

The series win marked OU's 17th straight win in Big 12 regular season contests and 50th straight Big 12 series victory, moving OU to 65-0-4 in conference series' dating back to 2011, good for an unbeaten streak of 69 straight.

The teams close the series with a Saturday finale at 1 p.m. CT. The game can be seen via SoonerVision on ESPN+ and heard on 107.7 The Franchise in Oklahoma and nationwide on The Varsity Network app.
