Eight Sooners Qualify for NCAAs on Day One of Big 12 Championship

The Oklahoma Sooners concluded the first day of the Big 12 Championship with eight Sooners qualifying for NCAAs and in fourth place.

The Sooners finished the first two sessions of the conference championship with 78.0 team points, boosted by five wins via pin.Ā

"We had some good wins today with bonus points and pins," head coach Lou Rosselli said. "Tomorrow's a new day and we'll start fighting again and do what we know we're supposed to."

In his fourth conference championship appearance, No. 7 seed Joey Prata won his preliminary and quarterfinal bouts, including a 5-3 win over No. 2 seed Jore Volk in sudden victory. Prata's 3-1 run earned him his third ticket to the NCAA Championships.

After losing his opening bout at 133 pounds, Wyatt Henson responded with a pin over WVU's Davin Rhoads at the 2:35 mark in the first round of consolations. Henson's win over Rhoads is his second of the season, with his previous win coming via a 9-2 decision. He won his next two bouts to advance to tomorrow's placement rounds and qualify for NCAAs.

No. 2 seed Mosha Schwartz punched his ticket to NCAAs after piecing together two comeback decision wins in the preliminary round and quarterfinals. With his lone loss coming in the semifinals, Schwartz continues his conference championship run in the placement rounds tomorrow.

Set for his fourth trip to the NCAA Championships, sixth seed Mitch Moore started his day with a pin early in the first period of his preliminary match. After falling 3-2 to Paniro Johnson (Iowa State) in the quarterfinals, Moore received a bye and won via disqualification to advance to tomorrow's session III.Ā

In his debut at the Big 12 Championship, 157-pounder Jared Hill secured three wins out of his four bouts to clinch an NCAA berth and advance to tomorrow's consolation semifinals. The Broken Arrow, Okla. product won his final bout of day one 5-3 in sudden victory.

Gerrit Nijenhuis won 8-7 in his opening match and via fall in the first period of the second round of consolations, but lost two bouts in the 165-pound bracket. Nijenhuis' top-8 finish secures his spot in the NCAA Championship.

Winning his first two bouts both via 3-2 decisions, Tate Picklo advanced to the 174-pound semifinals where he fell just short, 6-5, to No. 1 seed Peyton Mocco (Missouri). His semifinal run bidded the Mustang, Okla. product his first NCAA berth.

Josh Heindselman won his opening bout via a 23-8 tech fall, followed by a 5-3 win in sudden victory, but dropped two of his matches in the heavyweight bracket. Heindselman's top-8 finish grants him his third consecutive NCAA qualification.

Ā Keegan Moore won his first bout via a 16-3 major decision but fell short in two of his 184-pound consolation bouts. At 197 pounds, Carson Berryhill knocked off No. 8 seed Austin Cooley via pin at the 1:26 mark in his preliminary match before falling in his next two bouts.Ā

Oklahoma will return for day two of the Big 12 Championships at 12 p.m. CT on Sunday, March 5 at BOK Center in Tulsa. The third session will be televised on ESPN+ and the finals will be aired on ESPNU.
