The Goodwin
Oklahoma in Second After Day One at The Goodwin
March 30, 2023 | Men's Golf
SAN FRANCISCO – Oklahoma was one of three teams to post a score in the red Thursday, as the Sooners wrapped up day one at The Goodwin alone in second after signing for a 275 (-5). The Crimson and Cream, led by two golfers inside the top seven, trail No. 8 Stanford by two strokes with 36 holes left to play.
The 13th-ranked Sooners led for much of the day, teeing off in the afternoon wave vs. a 28-team field that features three ranked opponents. Birdies from the entire Oklahoma contingent on the ninth hole pushed the Sooners out in front, but the Cardinal closed the gap, overtaking Oklahoma on the back nine.
Freshman Jase Summy carded a near-perfect 67 (-3), marred only by a bogey on the 467-yard par-4 14th hole at historic TPC Harding Park in San Francisco. The Keller, Texas, product owns a share of third and is just one back of the individual pace entering Friday's second round. Ben Lorenz joined Summy in the top 10, registering a 68 (-2) to grab a piece of seventh, two back of the lead. Stephen Campbell Jr. collected four birdies on his way to a 69 (-1), good for a T14 spot after day one. Drew Goodman (T44, +1) and Patrick Welch (T111, +5) rounded out Oklahoma's lineup.
Playing unattached, Matthew Troutman bogeyed his first hole but responded with seven pars and two birdies to get in the mix. He closed his back nine at 1-over to post an even-par 70 on the day and shares 28th.
The Sooners tee off at 10:05 a.m. CT off No. 10 in Friday's second round. They're paired with Stanford (1, -7), Georgia Tech (3, -3) and Oregon (6, +1). Troutman goes off on the 10th at 9:05 a.m. CT.
