Sooners Dominant in Sweep Over Cyclones
March 25, 2023 | Softball
AMES, Iowa — No. 1 Oklahoma completed the Big 12 series opener sweep over Iowa State with a pair of run-rule wins in Saturday's doubleheader, 13-3 in five innings and 10-0 in five.
The Sooners (30-1, 3-0) beat the Cyclones by a combined score of 23-3 in the final two games of the series, highlighted by eight home runs on the day and a one-hitter from Jordy Bahl in the finale.
With the series sweep, OU has not lost a conference series since 2011 and have won 79 of its last 81 Big 12 regular season games. Additionally, with three straight W's this weekend, the Sooners have beat ISU 47 consecutive games dating back to 2006.
In game one, after the Sooners fell behind 2-0 in the first inning, Oklahoma outscored the Cyclones 13-1 through the final four innings powered by a home run cycle: round-trippers of one run, two runs, three runs and a grand slam.
ISU (11-17, 0-3) went up early courtesy of a Milaysia Ochoa RBI double and a Sooner error that allowed another run to cross home. The earned run was just the second run OU starter Nicole May has given up in 2023 and the error was OU's just six of the season.
The Sooners wasted no time in taking the lead back for good at the top of the second. After a walk to Grace Lyons and ISU error that allowed Alynah Torres to reach base, junior Alyssa Brito blasted her eighth home run of the season on a three-run shot to center field.
In the third, OU plated three more runs on three hits, including two homers. Haley Lee blasted the first of the frame on a solo shot to left center, her sixth of the season. Three batters later, fellow super senior Grace Lyons lifted a two-run homer to left field.
The fourth and fifth innings saw three more Sooner jacks to bring the game total to six by six different Sooners. In the fourth, junior Tiare Jennings hit her seventh of the season on her fifth career grand slam, prior to Jocelyn Erickson and Sophia Nugent back-to-back blasts in the fifth, the freshman and sophomore's seventh and fourth, respectively of 2023.
The Cyclones put one more run on the board in the fourth via a solo home run, just the second May has surrendered on the season.
May (9-0) finished the complete game with two hits allowed for three runs, only two being earned, and four strikeouts and four walks.
Eight Sooners registered a hit in the contest with six bringing in at least one run, paced by Jennings' four RBIs and Brito's three. The six single-game homers tied a season high, the third time OU's offense has accomplished the feat in 2023.
In game two, the series finale, OU raced out to an 8-0 lead at the top of the first and put up single runs in the second and fifth for a 10-0 final.
Oklahoma sent 12 batters to the plate in the first, resulting in eight runs on five hits and an error. Kinzie Hansen, Brito, Lyons, Erickson and Bahl all batted runs in prior to a Jayda Coleman two-run home run, her team-leading eighth of the year.
The second inning saw Lyons hit her second homer in as many games and her fourth of the season, all coming in her eight games since returning from illness last weekend.
An ISU error closed the scoring in the fifth on an at-bat from Quincee Lilio that allowed Torres to cross home for OU's 10th run.
Bahl allowed just one hit and collected her third shutout of the season and OU's nation-leading 19th of 2023, striking out five and walking none in the complete-game effort.
Six Sooners had a hit in game two, led by multi-hit performances from Coleman, Lyons and Torres.
OU improved to 30-1 on the year with 18 run-rule victories. The offense has blasted 57 home runs and are outscoring opponents 278-27 while the pitching staff has tossed 19 shutouts and struck out 250 batters, allowing opponents to bat just .149 on the year.
The Sooners turn their attention to a highly-anticipated rematch of the 2022 WCWS Championship Series vs. No. 10/8 Texas next weekend, March 31-April 2. Game one of the three-game series will be at a sold-out USA Softball Hall of Fame Complex (6 p.m. CT), while games two and three will be held in Norman at 11 a.m.
Fans attending Friday's opener are encouraged to "Stripe the Stadium" in OKC with those in even sections tasked to wear crimson and fans in odd sections to wear white.
Friday's game can be seen via ESPN+ while Saturday and Sunday's will be shown on ESPN2. Games can be heard via 107.7 The Franchise in Oklahoma or nationwide on The Varsity app.
