After day one of the NCAA Championships, five Sooners advanced through the wrestlebacks brackets.
ĀNo. 8 seed Mosha Schwartz advanced to the Round of 16 after toppling Casey Swiderski (Iowa State) 4-1 in his first round match, but fell just short to Allan Hart (Mizzou) via RT in TB-2 of his quarterfinal bout. Schwartz moves to the wrestlebacks side of the 141-pound bracket.
ĀResponding to an early loss in session one, Tate Picklo advanced to session three after piecing together an emphatic 11-3 major decision in his first wrestlebacks match at 174 pounds. Leading 4-2 early in the third, Picklo separated from Lock Haven's Tyler Stoltzfus to win in his first trip to the NCAA Championships.
ĀAfter falling short in his first bout at NCAAs, Wyatt Henson responded with a 7-2 decision win over Kurtis Phipps (Bucknell) in his first match in the 133-pound consolations. The redshirt freshman will face No. 7 seed Michael Colaiocco (Penn) in the second round of consolations.
ĀAt 149 pounds, Mitch Moore advanced to the second round of consolations after winning his first wrestlebacks bout 3-0.Ā
ĀAt 285 pounds, Josh Heindselman ended the first day with a 14-6 major decision over Trevor Tinker (Cal Poly) to move on to the second round of consolations. His Thursday night win marks his third career victory at the NCAA tournament.Ā
ĀJoey Prata fell short to No. 8 seed Anthony Noto 5-2 and 2-0 to Nick Babin (Colorado) in wrestlebacks. The graduate concludes his wrestling career with three NCAA appearances and 73 collegiate career wins. In the 165-pound bracket, Gerrit Nijenhuis fell just short, 4-3, to Izzak Olejnik and 12-3 in his consolation match. Jared Hill won his first match of wrestlebacks via a 7-6 decision, but dropped two bouts in the 157-pound bracket.
ĀDay two of the NCAA Championships will begin at 11 a.m. CT on Friday, March 17 at BOK Center. The third session will be on ESPNU, followed by the fourth session on ESPN.
