Lorenz Chases Title, Sooners in Second in Puerto Rico

RIO GRANDE, Puerto Rico – Oklahoma junior golfer Ben Lorenz leads after 36 holes at the Puerto Rico Classic after signing for a 4-under, 68, in Monday's second round. The ninth-ranked Sooners share second place and will enter Tuesday's final round five strokes back of the lead as they look to defend their team title in Puerto Rico.
Three golfers in the Sooners' (T2, -14) lineup sit inside the top 20 of the individual leaderboard, as the Crimson and Cream signed for a 279 (-9) to post the second-lowest score of the day, jumping two spots in the team race Monday.
Lorenz (1, -9), playing this week as an individual and not in the OU lineup, is the tournament's solo leader after 36 holes – his first 36-hole lead in college. After starting on No. 15, he posted six birdies and no bogeys across his first 14 holes to jump into the lead. However, bogeys on the 11th and 12th moved him from 11-under to 9-under, still good for a two-stroke advantage with 18 holes outstanding. The tournament winner will receive an invitation to play in the PGA Tour's Puerto Rico Open in early March. Lorenz is looking to follow 2022 Haskins Award winner Chris Gotterup and become the second consecutive Sooner to win the college event.
Sophomore Drew Goodman (T9, -5) carded a 71 (-1) in Sunday's opening round but responded with a team-low 68 (-4) on Monday to move into a tie for ninth at 5-under par. If the Norman product notches a top-10 finish tomorrow, it would mark the seventh of his young career.
Leading the way overall for the Sooner lineup was Patrick Welch (T4, -6), who fired a 69 (-3) Monday to get to 6-under on the week, good for a fourth-place tie. The All-American is chasing teammate and leader Ben Lorenz and will try and close a three-stroke gap in the final round as he hunts his third collegiate victory.
Stephen Campbell Jr. finished even-par on the day and fell into a tie for 20th at 3-under. Jaxon Dowell, joining Lorenz as an individual this week, is in 26th after a 70 (-2) on Monday.
Rounding out the Oklahoma contingent, Luke Kluver (T48, +1) and Jake Holbrook (T65, +6) signed for matching 71s in the second round.
After trailing by 11 shots in the team race entering the day, the Sooners closed on leaders East Tennessee State (1, -19), getting within three strokes late in the round before the Bucs pushed their advantage back to five shots. The Sooners' 279 (-9) was the second-lowest round of the day, bested only by Ohio State's (T2, -14) 275 (-13) second-round score.
Oklahoma leads the field with 127 pars, but the team's 30 birdies are eighth in the 13-team field at the 54-hole tournament.
The Sooners will look to defend their Puerto Rico Classic team title when they tee off at 5:30 a.m. CT Tuesday with ETSU and Ohio State. Lorenz goes off of No. 15 with Maryland's Will Celiberti (T50, +2) and Tennessee's Laurent Desmarchais (T4, -6) in a shotgun start at the same time as the Sooners.
