OU Closes Undefeated Opening Weekend with Run Rule

February 12, 2023 | Softball

IRVINE, Calif. — No. 1 Oklahoma capped opening weekend with a 9-0, five-inning win over San Jose State Sunday afternoon.

Freshman left-handed pitcher Kierston Deal impressed in her first collegiate start, tossing four scoreless innings and allowing just one hit and a pair of walks with five strikeouts. The Sooners (5-0) hit a pair of homers in the game courtesy of redshirt senior Grace Green and freshman Jocelyn Erickson. Every position player that made the opening weekend trip made a plate appearance in the game, with seven Sooners registering a hit.

Oklahoma struck early in the first inning on a 2-RBI single from super senior Haley Lee that plated juniors Jayda Coleman and Tiare Jennings. Fellow redshirt senior Grace Lyons followed Lee's two-run single with a run-scoring triple to make it 3-0 Sooners after one.

In the bottom of the second, Jennings brought in OU's fourth run on a fielder's choice RBI that loaded the bases for the pinch-hitter Green. In her first at-bat of the early season, Green blasted her third career grand slam to put OU on top 8-0 through two.

Erickson chipped in her first collegiate homer on a solo shot to right in the third to bring the final score to 9-0, Sooners. Redshirt senior Alex Storako closed the contest in the circle for OU in the fifth, collecting one strikeout and surrendering one hit and one walk to the Spartans (0-5) before ending the game on a flyout to OU reserve center-fielder Hannah Coor

Fifteen Sooners made an appearance in the game with freshmen Deal, Erickson and Avery Hodge all seeing time in the field.

The Sooners finished the Mark Campbell Invitational 5-0 with three ranked wins and outscored opponents 29-5 on the weekend.

Oklahoma continues its 2023 season in Waco, Texas, Feb. 17-19 at the Getterman Classic. OU meets Longwood, Stephen F. Austin, Army and host Baylor.
