No. 1 OU Run Rules No. 17/14 Stanford

February 10, 2023 | Softball

IRVINE, Calif. — No. 1 Oklahoma collected its second ranked victory in its first three games with a 10-1, six-inning win over No. 17/14 Stanford Friday night.

Redshirt senior Haley Lee highlighted the run-rule victory, hitting the walk-off home run, OU's first blast of the season, in the sixth inning. Lee finished 2-for-4 with two RBIs. Junior All-American Tiare Jennings chipped in a perfect 3-for-3 night with two RBIs while fellow junior Alyssa Brito brought in three runs on a bases-clearing double in the fifth.

In the circle, redshirt senior Alex Storako made her OU debut in impressive fashion, tossing 5.2 innings and allowing just one run on three hits and a walk to go with six strikeouts. Freshman Kierston Deal also made her Sooner debut, collecting the final out of the sixth inning via a one-pitch groundout.

After a scoreless first, senior Alynah Torres opened the game's scoring in the bottom of the second with a laser of a double to left center that scored Rylie Boone from first. Freshman Jocelyn Erickson followed suit with an RBI single, the first hit of the frosh's career. Jennings then ripped a two-run double to make it 4-0 after two.

In the fourth, Stanford put the first run of the season on the Sooners via solo home run from Aly Kaneshiro. Storako quickly induced a flyout and groundout to limit the damage.

The Sooners loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the fifth, setting up Brito's three-RBI double that broke the game open. Entering as a pinch hitter, sophomore Jordy Bahl batted in her second run of the season with a fielder's choice RBI that scored Brito.

Storako and Deal combined to retire the Stanford offense in three batters at the top of the sixth with the help of a timely double play from first baseman Cydney Sanders. In the bottom frame, Jennings drew a leadoff walk to set up Lee's walk-off homer. The fifth-year senior put a charge into a 1-0 pitch, sending it over the left field wall for OU's first mercy-rule win of the season.

The Sooners meet another ranked foe Saturday at the Mark Campbell Invitational, facing off against No. 14/16 Washington at 9 p.m. CT. The game can be seen on FloSoftball and heard via 107.7 The Franchise in Oklahoma and nationwide on the TuneIn app.
