NORMAN – Oklahoma men's basketball hosts No. 9/8 Kansas on Saturday, Feb. 11. Tip is at noon inside Lloyd Noble Center.
Saturday's game against the Jayhawks will be broadcast on CBS with Tom McCarthy, Bill Raftery and Jay Wright on the call. Fans may also listen on the Sooner Sports Radio Network (KRXO 107.7 FM The Franchise in Oklahoma City; KTBZ 1430 AM in Tulsa; Varsity Radio App) with Toby Rowland and Kevin Henry announcing.
In the Sooners' first AP top-15 meeting of the week, four Sooners recorded double-digit points against No. 14/12 Baylor on Wednesday, Feb. 8. Grant Sherfield scored a team-high 15 points and tallied seven assists. Sherfield recorded his 500th career assist on a Jacob Groves 3-pointer in the first half. Milos Uzan added 11 points and three rebounds and Joe Bamisile tallied 10 points on 4-of-7 shooting and added seven rebounds. Otega Oweh made his first career start and scored 10 points.
SCOUTING THE JAYHAWKS
Bill Self is in his 20th season as Kansas head men's basketball coach and has compiled a 571-129 record. Self has led the Jayhawks to a 19-5 overall record and 7-4 mark in Big 12 play this season. In KU's last outing, the Jayhawks beat No. 5 Texas 88-80 at Allen Fieldhouse.
Jalen Wilson averages a team-high 20.7 points and 8.5 rebounds per contest. Gradey Dick adds 14.5 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.5 steals and 1.6 assists per outing. Kevin McCullar adds 10.5 points and is second on the team with 7.7 rebounds per game. KJ Adams Jr., averages 10.4 points and wrangles 4.4 boards per game. Dajuan Harris averages 5.1 assists per game. Wilson, Dick, Adams and Harris have started all 24 games. McCullar has started the 23 games he has appeared in.
Kansas is ranked in the top 60 in four NCAA DI categories. KU is 14th in assists per game (16.8), 31st in steals per game, 35th in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.3) and 58th in fastbreak points (12.1). The Jayhwks are conference leaders in assist-to-turnover ratio, defensive rebounds per game (26.5) and rebounds per game (37.0).
KANSAS CONNECTIONS
Grant Sherfield and Kansas' Jalen Wilson played together at TA Howard Middle School in Arlington, Texas and AAU with YGC36 Basketball. Prior to finishing his high school career at Sunrise Christian Academy in Bel Aire, Kan., Sherfield attended North Crowley High in Fort Worth, Texas. The former teammates played against each other for the first time last season on Dec. 29 when the Nevada Wolfpack visited Kansas. Sherfield tallied 16 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals. Wilson wrangled a team-high 10 boards and added seven points.
Tanner and Jacob Groves faced the Jayhawks in the 2021 NCAA Tournament with Eastern Washington. T. Groves led the Eagles with 35 points on 11-of-18 shooting and added five rebounds and three blocks. He finished 5 of 11 from deep. J. Groves added 23 points on 8-of 11 shooting, buried four 3-pointers and wrangled a team-high nine boards.
RANKING SUMMARY
Oklahoma is ranked in the top 60 in two NCAA Division I categories. OU is 22nd in 3-point percentage defense (30.0%) and 44th in field goal percentage (47.3%). The Sooners are second in the conference in effective field goal percentage (53.6%) and field goal percentage. OU is third in defensive rebounds per game (25.5), fouls per game (16.0) and 3-point percentage defense.
Grant Sherfield is 15th nationally in 3-point percentage (43.1%) and leads the Big 12. Sherfield is first in the league in 3-pointers made (62) and ranks second in 3-pointers per game (2.6). The Fort Worth, Texas product is second in free throw percentage (85.5%), third in field goal attempts (313), fourth in field goals (135) and fourth in minutes per game (33:21). Tanner Groves is 76th in the nation in defensive rebounds per game (5.9) and is third in the conference. Groves is fourth in total rebounds (166).
Sherfield is 24th among active NCAA Division I career leaders in scoring average (15.4), 26th in assists (505), 27th in assist average (4.68) and 32nd in assist-to-turnover ratio (1.85). Sherfield is one of 17 active DI players with 1,600-plus points and 500-plus assists. Groves is 80th in career rebounds (708) and 95th in games played (141).
NET/STRENGTH OF SCHEDULE
The Sooners are 63rd in the NET (2/9) and Kansas is 10th. Of Oklahoma's seven remaining contests, the Sooners have six quad one games and one quad two game. All 10 Big 12 teams are ranked in the top 74 and seven are ranked in the top 25. The conference has an average NET ranking of 27.5.
Oklahoma has the third toughest remaining schedule based on future opposition winning percentage (117-45, 72.2%). Five Big 12 teams are ranked in the top six.
