NORMAN – The No. 13/21 Oklahoma wrestling team kicks off the 2023-24 season on Thursday with a nonconference dual at Central Michigan. The dual is slated for a 6 p.m. start time in Mount Pleasant and it will be streamed on ESPN+.
SOONERS IN THE RANKINGS
Oklahoma enters the season ranked No. 13 overall per FloWrestling and 21
st nationally by the National Wrestling Coaches Association.
Among the 10 Sooners making their season debuts, six enter the season ranked in FloWrestling's latest release:
Mosha Schwartz at No. 12 at 141, No. 13
Willie McDougald at 149, No. 13
Tate Picklo at 174, No. 24
Giuseppe Hoose at 184, No. 3
Stephen Buchanan at 197 and No. 15
Josh Heindselman at 285.
Buchanan, a two-time All-American and three-time national qualifier at Wyoming, will look to become Oklahoma's first national champion since Cody Brewer in 2015.
SEASON OUTLOOK
Heindselman, Schwartz, Hill, Nijenhuis and Picklo all head into the season looking to return to the NCAA Wrestling Championships in March after qualifying last season, while the rest of the Sooners look to earn their first NCAA appearances. The Sooners finished 9-8 and 2-6 in the Big 12 a year ago.
SCOUTING THE CHIPPEWAS AND PAST RESULTS
Thursday marks the second career matchup between OU and Central Michigan. The Sooners defeated the Chippewas in the quarterfinals of the 2014 NWCA National Duals by a score of 25-16.
CMU finished 6-10 last season, winning the Mid-American Conference West Division title with a 5-1 dual-meet record and then finishing second in the MAC Championships. The Chippewas return defending MAC Champions Johnny Lovett (149 pounds) and Alex Cramer (174). Those two, along with Corbyn Munson (157) qualified for the NCAA Championships in 2023.
