NORMAN — Team Cream earned a 27-20 victory over Team Crimson in OU Wrestling's annual Crimson & Cream Dual, held Wednesday night at McCasland Field House.
"We saw a lot of good things," first-year head coach
Roger Kish said following the scrimmage. "We did a good job of implementing some of the positions we've focused on over the last eight weeks and showing strong fundamentals."
The intrasquad scrimmage began with a 125-pound weight class meeting between sophomores
Conrad Hendriksen and
Christian Forbes. Hendriksen picked up a 14-2 major decision, followed by a 5-1 decision over
Derek Glenn in the eighth match of the evening.
Next up,
Kaden Smith secured a 1-0 decision over
Gabe Vidlak in a tightly contested 133-pound match. Smith went on to compete in another close-scoring battle in match nine, falling to Northern Colorado transfer
Jace Koelzer 4-3.
In the first of three 165-pound bouts, newcomer
Mannix Morgan defeated
Tyten Volk in a 7-2 decision. The North Dakota State transfer competed again in match 10 against redshirt senior
Cael Carlson. Carlson put together a dominating performance, securing a 17-0 tech fall and delivering Team Cream five points in the team race.
Following a Big 12 Championships berth last season,
Carson Berryhill returned to the mat with a thrilling 2-2 Dec. (RT, OT-2) win over
Seth Seago after both grapplers exchanged escape points in the first 184-pound match. Berryhill competed against Buffalo transfer
Giuseppe Hoose in match 11. In his Sooner debut, Hoose posted an impressive 23-9 major decision victory.
In the lone 149-pound bout of the night, former Big 12 runner-up
Willie McDougald earned a big takedown in sudden victory to defeat
Cam Picklo 4-1 (SV-1).
The 174-pound match featured a showdown between two returning NCAA qualifiers from last season in
Tate Picklo and
Gerrit Nijenhuis. Picklo picked up the win via a 5-3 decision.
Stephen Buchanan, the No. 2 overall 197-pound wrestler in the nation according to InterMat, did not disappoint in his Oklahoma debut. The Wyoming transfer worked quickly to secure the 17-2 tech fall victory over
Mohamed Elgouhari.
Fresh off his third trip to the Big 12 Championships, heavyweight
Josh Heindselman defeated
Juan Mora by way of a 7-2 decision.
Wrestling at 165-pounds,
John Wiley concluded the scrimmage with an 11-0 major decision win over Volk.
The Sooners, ranked No. 13 in the InterMat preseason poll, will start the season at Central Michigan on Thursday, Nov. 9.
