NORMAN — Powered by the day's lowest round, No. 6 Oklahoma soared up the leaderboard and shares second place after 36 holes at the Ka'anapali Classic.
The Sooners (T2, -29) fired a 272 (-17) to erase a handful of shots off Liberty's (1, -34) lead and will enter Saturday's final round just five back of the leader.
Luke Kluver and
Stephen Campbell Jr. occupy top-10 spots on the leaderboard, with Kluver just one stroke back of first place as he hunts his first win as a Sooner.
Oklahoma was 10-under on the round as it approached the turn but still found itself 10 back of the Flames. But as the day came to a close, the Crimson and Cream kept chipping away at the lead, and when teams tee off on Saturday afternoon in the final round at the par-71 Royal Ka'anapali GC, OU will have a shot to win and defend its team title at the event. The Sooners have won the tournament three times (2015, 2019, 2022).
After carding a 66 on Thursday, Kluver performed even better Friday, firing a 65 (-6) with seven birdies. Kluver birdied the 10th to move into a share of first, but a bogey on the 17th pushed him to third place and one back of the lead.
Campbell Jr. matched his opening-round score of 67 (-4) to get to 8-under and earn a share of seventh with 18 holes to play. He was closely trailed by freshman teammate
PJ Maybank III, who shares 12th following a 70 (-1) on Frida and is playing unattached.
Jake Holbrook and
Jase Summy (unattached) are tied for 24th at 4-under par. Holbrook was sensational Friday, posting a bogey-free 65 to move into the red and guide the Sooners up the team leaderboard.
Ryder Cowan and
Drew Goodman closed the OU lineup and sit at 2-under.
The Sooners will look for their first win of the season and to extend their streak of consecutive semesters with a win to 13 on Saturday. They'll know exactly what they need to do as they tee off with leaders Liberty, East Tennessee State (T2, -29) and North Florida (4, -23) at 1:30 p.m. CT.
