Sooners in Fourth After Round One at Ka'anapali Classic

NORMAN – After 18 holes at the Ka'anapali Classic, the Oklahoma men's golf team sits in a tie for fourth on the team leaderboard at 12-under par, powered by a trio of golfers inside the top 15.
Luke Kluver and Stephen Campbell Jr. paced the Crimson and Cream on Thursday, firing a 66 (-5) and 67 (-4), respectively, at the par-71 Ka'anapali Royal Golf Course in Lahaina, Hawai'i, to open the 54-hole event. PJ Maybank, a freshman playing unattached from the lineup, fired a 65 (-6) and is tied for fifth.
The Sooners, defending champions of the event, opened the tournament strong, posting an 11-under mark on the front nine. But a 1-under par back nine kept OU, who made the turn in first, stationary vs. par and dropped it into fourth. Oklahoma enters Friday's second round 10 shots back of Liberty, who leads at Ka'anapali at 22-under par.
Kluver (T8, -5) opened the day on the third hole and posted birdies on his first two tests at the 6,700-yard track. An eagle on No. 6, followed by back-to-back birdies on Nos. 9 and 10 had the redshirt senior in the lead at 6-under thru nine. But a 1-over mark over his final nine holes moved him into a tie for eighth, three back of leader Robbie Higgins (North Florida).
Maybank shined on Thursday, using five birdies and an eagle, paired with one bogey, to card his best career round of 65 (-6) and grab a piece of fifth.
Stephen Campbell Jr. was strong all afternoon outside of a triple-bogey on No. 5. A team-high seven birdies paced the Richmond, Texas, product en route to a 67 (-4) and a share of 14th.
Freshman Ryder Cowan carded a 2-under 69 and claims 27th, while Drew Goodman's 70 (-1) earned him a spot of 42nd, along with teammate Jase Summy, who's playing unattached. Jake Holbrook rounded out the OU contingent with a 73 (+1).
The Sooners (T4, -12) tee off in Friday's second round with Hawai'i (6, -11), Sacramento State (T7, -8) and North Florida (T7, -8) at 1:30 p.m. CT.
