The 28th-ranked Oklahoma wrestling team completed a comeback victory over CampbellĀ on their first day at the Virginia DualsĀ on Friday.
The Sooners started their four-dual slate with a matchup against No. 23 Maryland (7-1). In a back-and-forth battle, OU (4-3) surrendered its lead in the 197-pound matchup and fell just short, 18-16. The first dual of the weekend was highlighted by No. 30 Josh Heindselman toppling No. 30 Jaron Smith.
Shortly after the Maryland contest, Oklahoma secured its first win of the weekend after overcoming an early 7-6 deficit against Campbell.
Trailing 6-0 after the first two bouts, the Sooners fought back with seven wins out of the remaining eight bouts. No. 30 Mosha Schwartz supplied the first win after breaking a 3-3 tie with a riding time point over Shannon Hanna in the 141-pound bout.Ā
Following Schwartz's lead, No. 13 Mitch Moore snapped a 1-1 tie in the third period with two takedowns. His 5-1 decision victory over Chris Rivera improved his record on the season to 9-2.
In his first collegiate start, Jared Hill recorded a 3-0 shutout win over Hagen Heistand after wrapping around Heistand for a takedown in the third period.Ā
No. 16 Gerrit Nijenhuis and Tate Picklo added to the momentum with two big victories, including a 9-3 decision for Nijenhuis and a 9-2 decision for Picklo.Ā
Inserted back into the 184-pound spot, Keegan Moore fended off a late rally by Caleb Hopkins to secure the 8-6 victory in his first appearance since Dec. 11.Ā
Up 4-1 going into the third period, No. 19 Josh Heindselman overpowered Chad Nix with 13 more points, started by a reversal five seconds into the period. His 17-5 major decision capped off the 22-9 victory for the Sooners and strengthened his major decision record to six on the season.Ā
