Sooners Take Two Over ISU
April 22, 2022 | Softball
NORMAN — No. 1 Oklahoma took both games of a doubleheader over Iowa State on Friday at Marita Hynes, beating the Cyclones 6-4 in game one and 9-0 in five innings in the nightcap.
OU (41-1, 10-1 Big 12) hit a combined four home runs across the two games from four different Sooners, while the pitching trio of Jordy Bahl, Nicole May and Hope Trautwein all saw action on the day. Sophomore Alyssa Brito continued her hot streak with a walk-off home run in game two.
Bahl picked up the game one win for her 18th victory of the season while Trautwein earned the save in the first game and the win in game two, her 12th of the year. Trautwein threw a gem in the latter contest, going the distance and allowing no runs and just one hit to go with three strikeouts.
With the pair of wins, Oklahoma is unbeaten in their last 64 conference series (60-0-4 in that span), dating back to 2011 and has won 69 of its last 71 Big 12 regular season games.
GAME ONE: OU 6, ISU 4
Oklahoma got challenged in the first game of the doubleheader, having to climb back from a 3-1 deficit after two and a half innings.
After an RBI single from Jana Johns in the second inning, Iowa State (21-23, 2-9 Big 12) plated three runs on three hits at the top of the third to take a two-run lead.
Oklahoma responded quickly in the bottom half of the third, putting up five runs on five hits to retake the lead for good. Tiare Jennings started things off with an RBI single to plate Jayda Coleman before an RBI single from Grace Lyons and RBI groundout by Kinzie Hansen. Jana Johns brought the final two runs of the frame in on her 10th home run of the season, a two-run blast to right center. Johns has homered in back-to-back games for the third time this season.
Bahl went on to retire six of her next seven batters faced through the fourth, fifth and sixth innings before May entered in relief in the sixth and allowed one hit in one inning. Trautwein finished things in the seventh with a pair of strikeouts and an exceptional diving catch from Coleman in left center. Trautwein earned the first save by a Sooner pitcher this season, stranding the tying run in the seventh.
Johns led the team with three RBIs in a 2-for-4 performance while six Sooners registered a hit and four batted in at least one run. Super senior Taylon Snow recorded her first three-hit game of the season, finishing a perfect 3-for-3.
Bahl fanned seven in 5.1 innings pitched, allowing four runs on four hits and two walks.
Oklahoma stole seven bases in the game, marking the most since swiping eight vs. SIU-Edwardsville on Feb. 15, 2014.
GAME TWO: OU 9, ISU 0 (5)
The teams turned around for the second game of the doubleheader and the Sooners came out swinging with nine runs on nine hits to win their 33rd game by mercy rule. OU launched three home runs in a game for the 22nd time in their 42 games.
After Trautwein sat the Cyclones down in order in the top half of the first, OU put up three runs on three hits in the bottom frame. Jennings started the spree again with an RBI single before a well-executed squeeze bunt from Lyons plated the next OU run. Brito brought in the third and final run of the inning on an RBI groundout.
The Sooners tacked on two more in the second courtesy of Rylie Boone and Johns. Boone blasted her second homer of the season and third of her career on a deep shot to right field before Johns registered an RBI single, her fourth run batted in across the two games.
Senior captain Lynnsie Elam launched her 12th homer of the season in the third on a solo shot to left. In the fourth, Lyons added another run on a double to left field that scored pinch runner Turiya Coleman.
Brito walked the game off in run-rule fashion in the fifth on a two-run homer to left center, her first walk-off home run as a Sooner and her sixth blast in the last seven games. The sophomore has already eclipsed her home run total from a season ago (10) with 12 on the year.
Brito paced OU in runs batted in with three on the night in a 1-for-2 performance, while Lyons brought in a pair in a 2-for-2 showing. Eight Sooners recorded a hit and six brought in a run.
Trautwein won her 12th game of the season in the circle with another gem, a complete-game, one-hit shutout with three strikeouts and no walks. The redshirt senior has not allowed a run in her last six appearances and has not surrendered an earned run since Feb. 25 vs. Long Beach State.
The teams meet Saturday for the series finale at 1 p.m. CT at Marita Hynes Field. The game can be seen via SoonerSports.tv and heard on the radio on 1560 AM or 103.3 FM The Franchise 2.
