Drew Goodman

Strong Afternoon Gives OU Second After 36 Holes

TEMPE, Ariz. — Three Sooners are tied for sixth, and the top-ranked Oklahoma men's golf team is in the hunt for a school-record fifth team title after 36 holes at the Thunderbird Collegiate.

Oklahoma (2, -17) closed Friday's back nine of the second round by posting nine birdies to get within two shots of leaders No. 4 Arizona State (1, -19) entering Saturday's final round at the 54-hole event held at Papago Golf Club in Tempe.Ā Logan McAllister and Chris Gotterup, who were named semifinalists for the Ben Hogan Award on Friday, are joined by freshman Drew Goodman inside the top 10, while Stephen Campbell Jr. owns a share of 18th.

"We've got a big day in front of us tomorrow," head coach Ryan Hybl said. "We have a great opportunity tomorrow to go out and put together some clean rounds. Our guys are excited about the chance to be back in the heat."

Goodman (T6, -5), a true freshman from Norman, was steady all day against a field that features six of the top-15 players in the country. The Norman product opened Friday with an opening-round 69 (-2) at the par-71, 7,317 course before posting a 68 (-3) in the afternoon to put himself in position to claim his fourth top-10 finish of the year. His back-to-back rounds in the 60s give him 10 such rounds on the year, third-most on the team.

"Drew was great today," Hybl added. "He putted very nice today and did a great job of not giving up any shots."

McAllister (T6, -5) matched Goodman's scores on the day, firing 69 and 68 to extend his strong run of play. The All-American, who found his name on both the Hogan semifinalist list and Haskins watch list this week, hasn't finished outside of the top 20 all season and owns a trio of top-10 finishes. McAllister opened his second round with a birdie on No. 1, followed by a double-bogey on the par-4 second and then a birdie on No. 4. The senior then rattled off 10 pars before playing his final five holes 3-under par to get back into contention.

Gotterup (T6, -5) fired his 11th and 12th round in the 60s Friday, joining McAllister and Goodman with a 69 and 68. He was nearly perfect in the afternoon, tallying four birdies and 10 pars thru 14 before a bogey on 16 moved him back into a tie with his fellow Sooners. The Hogan Award semifinalist has two wins on the season, paired with five total top-10 finishes. If the Little Silver, N.J., product erases the five-shot deficit and wins on Saturday, he would join Patrick Lee atop the school's record books with three victories in a season but would do so in seven fewer tournaments.

Campbell Jr. (T18, -2) responded nicely for Hybl's team in his second round. The redshirt freshman grabbed a bogey on No. 4 but then finished his round with 11 pars and three birdies to move into the red and owns a share of 18th entering the weekend.

Patrick Welch (T69, +7) was in a good spot at the turn of his second round, sitting inside the top 25 at even-par, but the senior tallied a 42 (+7) on the way into the clubhouse to drop into a tie for 69th.

Ben Lorenz (T59, +4) played as an individual, posting a 78 and 68 Friday.

As they've done in almost every event this season, the Sooners ledĀ the field on par 3s, posting a 4-over mark for the day with a 3.10 scoring average on such holes. The Crimson and Cream's 119 pars were the most on the day, and its 38 birdies ranked fourth.

Oklahoma (2, -17) trails host No. 4 Arizona State (1, -19) by two strokes with 18 holes outstanding in the team race. If Hybl's team can erase the deficit and win, it would tie the 2021 and 2018 teams with a school-record five wins in a season.Ā
