Men's Golf to Close Regular Season at Thunderbird
April 14, 2022 | Men's Golf
TEMPE, Ariz. — The top-ranked Oklahoma men's golf team will try and close its regular season on a high note this weekend at the Thunderbird Collegiate in Tempe, Ariz. The two-day, 54-hole tournament, slated for April 15-16, showcases four of the nation's top-five teams as the nation's best jockey for No. 1 seeds entering the postseason.
It's the Sooners' first appearance at Papago since a third-place finish in 2018 when Quade Cummins finished solo third and a lineup that featured five Sooners that turned professional fired an 833 (-19) to claim the bronze. Oklahoma's 2022 appearance will mark the program's 22nd all-time at The Thunderbird, but just the second since 2012.
The Sooners, who enter the week ranked No. 1 by Golfstat and the GCAA, have four team wins this season, including two in the spring, putting together the best back-to-back tournament scores in program history.
The Oklahoma lineup boasts three All-Americans in Chris Gotterup, Logan McAllister and Patrick Welch and is rounded out by Drew Goodman and Stephen Campbell Jr. Gotterup and McAllister were named to the Haskins Watch List on Monday, a trophy that is awarded annually to the nation's top golfer. In 2021-22, the Sooners' lineup has combined for four wins, nine top-five finishes and 36 rounds in the 60s.
