OU Makes History With Victory Over No. 1 Texas

MADISON, Wis. — The No. 8 Oklahoma women's tennis team took the victory over defending NCAA Champions and No. 1 ranked Texas,, 4-1, at the ITA National Indoor Championships to move into the semifinals. This is the first time in program history that an OU squad has taken down the top-ranked team in the nation.

This marks the first time the Sooners have beat the Longhorns since 2003, 4-3.

Kicking off the match in doubles, Anchisa Chanta and Emma Staker defeated Allura and Bella Zamarripa, 6-3, on court three to give the Sooners their first win of the day. Ivana and Carmen Corley then clinched the doubles point at the top court, 6-3, against Kylie Collins and Sabina Zeynalova to give OU the 1-0 lead.

Getting into singles, No. 57 Ivana Corley took the victory over Charlotte Chavatipon, 7-6 (7-3), 6-2, at the No. 3 spot to extend the lead, 2-0.

No. 15 Layne Sleeth then fell to No. 42 Peyton Stearns, 3-6, 5-7, at the top court to put the Longhorns on the board.

The Sooners responded as No. 35 Carmen Corley defeated No. 26 Kylie Collins, 6-1, 2-6, 6-3, on court two, putting OU up 3-1.

To clinch the match, freshman and No. 103 ranked Emma Staker grabbed the win over Malaika Rapolu at the No. 6 spot, 4-6, 6-3, 6-0.

When play was haulted, No. 88 Anchisa Chanta was up 7-6 (3), 6-4 against Sabina Zeynalova on court four, while Alexandra Pisareva had the leg up on Vivian Ovrootsky, 6-4, 5-7, 1-0 at the No. 5 spot.

With the win, the Sooners are headed to the semifinals tomorrow at 3:30 p.m. CT to face No. 5 Pepperdine.
