NORMAN — For the fifth time in the past six seasons, Oklahoma will open its season on the road at the Michigan State Open. The tournament opens on Saturday morning, with final matches taking place in the evening in East Lansing, Mich.
Sixteen Sooners are set to compete at the season-opening tournament.
"We're excited to get our season underway this weekend in Michigan," OU head coach
Lou Rosselli said. "These guys have worked hard all offseason and earned the opportunity to wrestle for Oklahoma. I'm excited to see who gets out there, wrestles hard and competes against some good wrestlers."
Among the 16 Sooners competing, four appear in the FloWrestling preseason poll: No. 11
Joey Prata (125), No. 24
Wyatt Henson (133), No. 23
Jacob Butler (157) and No. 15
Josh Heindselman (285). A dozen other Sooner grapplers will look to wrestle their way into the top 25 with strong performances Saturday.
Butler, Heindselman and Prata enter the season fresh off of NCAA appearances in 2021-22, along with two-time NCAA qualifiers
Gerrit Nijenhuis and
Mosha Schwartz. Nijenhuis, a 165-pound Purdue transfer, and Schwartz, a 141-pound Northern Colorado transfer, are both set to make their Oklahoma debuts. Both wrestlers won the wrestle-off at their weight class last week at OU's Crimson and Cream Dual.
In addition to Schwartz and Nijenhuis, six other Sooners are set to make their debuts over the weekend. Transfer
Wyatt Henson (133), sophomores
Jared Hill (157) and
Seth Seago (197), redshirt sophomore
Greyden Penner (184) and freshmen
Joey Cruz (125) and
John Wiley (157).
In Oklahoma's last trek to East Lansing, Prata clinched first place in the 125-pound weight class,
Mitch Moore and Heindselman finished as runners-up in their respective classes while
Darrien Roberts earned bronze at 184 pounds.
