NORMAN – For the first time in over five years, the Oklahoma wrestling team won all 10 matches in a dual to dispatch Little Rock 37-0 at McCasland Field House on Friday night.
The win was highlighted by a pin at 141 pounds from Mosha Schwartz and bonus points in four other matches as the Sooners (2-1) displayed one of the most dominant efforts of the Lou Rosselli era. With the win, Oklahoma improved to 3-0 all-time vs. Little Rock, who jumpstarted its program in 2019. The Sooners' 37 team points were the most since a 41-6 thrashing of Maryland last season, and Friday's 37-point win was the largest margin of victory since a 53-0 shutout of Sacred Heart on Nov. 11, 2017.
"It's always good to win, especially in dominant fashion," Rosselli said. "I'm impressed by the growth each guy has had, and the way they won even the close matches tonight. We were really good at some weight classes and need to work on some things at others, but at the end of the day we all did what we needed to which was win."
No. 16 Joey Prata started the night with a 10-1 major decision over Jeremiah Reno at 125 pounds. The redshirt senior jumped out to a 2-0 start in the first period with a single-leg takedown before adding an escape with another takedown in the second. Prata added five more points in the final frame to post four team points for the Sooners.
In his McCasland Field House debut, Iowa transfer Wyatt Henson, ranked 32nd, cruised past Josh Sarpy with multiple near falls en route to a 16-3 major decision. Henson's major decision increased OU's lead to 8-0.
Trailing early in his bout, No. 27 Mosha Schwartz also made a statement in his McCasland debut with a fall in the third period over Jayden Gomez at 141 pounds. Schwartz's pin marked the seventh pin of his career and his third as a Sooner.
At 149 pounds, No. 17 Mitch Moore battled for a 4-3 decision over Joseph Bianchi. A takedown in the first gave Moore an early lead, but Bianchi used a second-period reversal to tie the match 3-3. Moore got an escape in the third frame to claim the match 4-3 and preserve the shutout.
Next up, No. 27 Jacob Butler had an early takedown but was hit with a stall in the second period. Butler and Matt Bianchi exchanged takedowns before Bianchi was hit with a stalling penalty nearing the end of the bout. With the stalling penalty, Butler snatched a 6-5 lead before a penalty point made it 7-5 in favor of the Sooner.
At 165 pounds, No. 14 Gerrit Nijenhuis captured the lead early in his match with takedowns and back points for an 8-1 edge over Brendon Abdon. The Purdue transfer added three more points with an escape and takedown to clinch the 11-1 major decision and bonus points to make it 24-0.
In the most anticipated bout of the night, No. 13 Darrien Roberts and Triston Wills battled in a low-scoring affair that was started by Roberts securing a single-leg takedown in the first frame. The Sooner escaped halfway through the second period and rode for 30 seconds to open the third period before Wills escaped to make it 3-2 with a minute left. Roberts held Wills off the remainder of the match to secure the 3-2 decision, improving his record to 11-2 on the season.
No. 33 Greyden Penner began his 184-pound matchup by escaping in the second period to take a 1-0 lead. He tripped Mason Diel to go up 3-1 in the second period and steadied the remainder of the match to win 5-3.
At 197, No. 26 Keegan Moore logged an early takedown to take a 2-1 advantage over Ty Lukens. He began the second frame with another takedown, but Lukens reversed before Moore escaped to make it 5-3. With seconds remaining in the bout, Moore held off a Lukens' shot and secured the takedown plus riding time to finish off an 8-4 decision.
Closing the shutout, heavyweight No. 18 Josh Heindselman took control early with a takedown in the first period, followed by another takedown late in the second. Leading 5-2 going into the third period, Heindselman dominated the final frame to win via an 11-3 major decision, the third major decision of his career.
"I think Josh is wrestling the best I have seen him wrestle in three years at Oklahoma," Rosselli said. "He was being aggressive and scoring consistently. I was really impressed by his performance today."
The focus for the Sooners now turns to a Dec. 11 Bedlam dual with Oklahoma State, slated for 3 p.m. at McCasland Field House. Tickets are still available for purchase for the Bedlam dual and can be purchased through the Oklahoma ticket office. The dual will be televised nationally on ESPNU.
