NORMAN — The Oklahoma soccer team dropped a 3-2 decision to West Virginia on Sunday afternoon in the home finale at John Crain Field.
The Sooners (8-6-3, 3-4-1) went up 2-0 in the first half courtesy of goals from junior Cailey England and freshman Chelsea Wagner. The Mountaineers (6-4-7, 3-1-4) completed the comeback with a late first-half goal and a pair in the second 45.
"We feel disappointed for letting a 2-0 lead slip at this level, but also have to have some perspective on the weekend we have had with our win against TCU," said head coach Mark Carr. "Now we have to look at where we can better and make sure we learn and make adjustments for Texas and the Big 12 tournament."
After an emotional 2-1 win Thursday night over No. 12 TCU, the Sooners appeared to pick up where they left off on Sunday, starting with a well-executed goal from England in the 18th minute. Off a deep through ball from super senior Bri Amos to senior Emma Hawkins, Hawkins crossed the ball in front of the goal to a streaking England who banged in her first goal of the season and third of her career. The double-assist from Amos and Hawkins was Amos' second assist of the season and Hawkins' first of 2022.
OU continued to be the aggressor in the first half, scoring its second goal in the 34th minute. On a deep ball into the box from sophomore Muriel Kroflin, Wagner was able to collect the ball and send it off a WVU defender and into the back of the net from inside the six-yard box.
The Mountaineers began the comeback with a pair of goals in the 38th and 73rd minutes from AJ Rodriguez.
The game-winner came from Dilary Heredia-Beltran in the 79th minute. Heredia-Beltran took possession on the WVU side of the field and after making a few OU defenders miss, fired a strike from distance that found the upper right of the net.
Oklahoma pressed to equalize things over the final 10 minutes with a shot from Wagner in the 86th minute but couldn't bring the match to a draw.
WVU held the shot advantage 17-9 and an 8-4 lead in corner kicks. The Sooners were lead in shots by Hawkins with three, while England put two looks on goal including her one goal. OU senior keeper Makinzie Short made three saves on the day.
The day was highlighted by a Senior Day celebration for super seniors Bri Amos and Makala Thomas, along with senior Taylor Hunter and senior equipment manager Katie Hapgood.
The Sooners head to Austin for the regular season finale on Thursday vs. No. 23 Texas. The match is set for a 7 p.m. start and can be seen on Longhorn Network.
Oklahoma has already clinched a spot in the Big 12 Soccer Championship in Round Rock, Texas, beginning Sunday, Oct. 30. The Sooners will learn their seeding and opponent after the regular season concludes next week. Fans can purchase tickets to the tournament via Big12Sports.com/buytickets.
