Sooners Fall in Regular Season Finale

October 27, 2022 | Soccer

AUSTIN — The Oklahoma soccer team dropped a 3-1 decision to No. 17 Texas in Austin in Thursday's regular season finale.

The Sooners (8-7-3, 3-5-1) competed with the Big 12 regular season champion Horns (13-1-4, 7-0-2), tallying eight shots to UT's 14, putting four looks on frame and controlling possesion for much of the second half.

Oklahoma will now look ahead to the Big 12 Soccer Championship in Round Rock, Texas, beginning this Sunday. OU earned the No. 6 seed and will face three-seed Texas Tech at 8 p.m. CT.

"First, I would like to congratulate Texas for being named the regular season champs," said OU head coach Mark Carr. "It was a positive performance for us tonight. I thought we controlled possession for long periods of the game and I was really pleased about our character to get back into the game at 2-1.

"In that moment, we have to do better to finish our chances, but what we created was very positive. Unfortunately, we have to do better in the box at our defensive set pieces and that allowed Texas to pull away. As the Big 12 Championship starts, we are excited and know we have work to do, but I have big belief in our team that we can do some great things."

Texas pulled ahead early with a goal from the Big 12's leading scorer, Trinity Byars, in the 14th minute. The Horns doubled their lead in the 17th minute with a goal from distance.

OU got on the board in the 35th minute courtesy of sophomores Leonie Weber and Bailey Wesco. After Wesco drew a foul in the box, Weber was able to convert the penalty kick with a strike to the bottom left of the net. It was Weber's fourth goal of the season and first in eight games.

Texas added a third goal in the 61st minute off a corner kick and header in the box.

Eight Sooners tallied a shot in the match with four putting a look on goal. In net, the Sooners split halves between keepers Makinzie Short and Olivia Ramey. Short made three saves to Ramey's two.

The Sooners meet the Red Raiders in the Big 12 Soccer Championship quarterfinals Sunday at 8 p.m. CT. The match can be seen on Big 12 NOW on ESPN+. Tickets for the tournament are available via Big12Sports.com/buytickets.
