NORMAN — The Oklahoma soccer team knocked off No. 12 TCU 2-1 Thursday night in Norman. It was the Horned Frogs (9-3-4, 4-1-2) first loss in conference play and OU's first win over TCU since 2016.
"It (this win) means a lot," head coach Mark Carr said. "It's been a lot of work. It's been a couple of years in the making. I was hired in 2020 and it's just been a process, so today was really rewarding for me, but more importantly for the program. It's just an amazing night for these kids, who have worked so hard all year long. They're young, but they're fighters and they hang around. Tonight they were rewarded."
The Sooners (8-5-3, 3-3-1) stormed back from a 1-0 deficit at the half to tally two second half goals and secure OU's first ranked win since 2018 and the first of the Carr era.
Freshman Ellie Geoffroy was the star on the night, scoring her first collegiate goal with the game winner in the 82nd minute off a pair of assists from Leonie Weber and Alexis Washington.
Senior keeper Makinzie Short was a force in goal for the Sooners, recording five saves and limiting numerous equalizing chances from the Horned Frogs in the final minutes.
TCU went up early on a goal from Michelle Slater in the 35th minute after an attempted clearance from OU was sent back and into the back of the net.
The Sooners came out as the aggressor in the second half, putting pressure on the Horned Frogs' backline with six shots in the second 45.
Redshirt senior Bri Amos scored the equalizer in the 61st minute. Following a turnover outside the box, Washington pressed to regain possession. The freshman secured the ball and played it into Amos, just outside the six-yard box, who turned and fired a shot past the reigning Big 12 Goalie of the Year, Lauren Kellett, into the top left corner of the net. It was Amos' fifth goal of the season and Washington's first of two assists on the night.
Oklahoma continued to apply pressure, earning a corner kick in the 82nd minute. Weber took the corner and played it short to Washington, who returned the ball to Weber, who found Geoffroy on the opposite side of the box, where the freshman played it off her chest and fired a right-footed strike for her first goal of her collegiate career. The double-assist from Weber and Washington was Weber's fourth of the season and Washington's team-leading eighth and second of the game.
"Just two really brilliant goals," Carr added. "Really it was just a great, feisty win – a signature win for our program. These kids have worked so hard and been so close, I'm just so happy for them. In this sport, you're not always rewarded for the work you put in, but tonight we were."
OU is the first Big 12 team to score multiple goals against TCU this season and it was the first time the Horned Frogs have given up multiple goals since allowing two vs. #16 Harvard on Sept 17.
"We have a lot of respect for TCU," Carr said. "I mean, there's a reason that they're league champions. They're so athletic and you just can't run with them all over the field, so you've got to have a sound game plan. We had to be smart about when we attacked and when we pressed defensively, because when you play against TCU, you have to defended perfectly. They had 15 corners and we defended every single one of them, and that isn't easy."
The Sooners continue to battle in the Big 12 standings as the regular season nears a close in the next week and the Big 12 Soccer Championship in Round Rock, Texas, is on the horizon.
OU plays two more regular season matches, beginning Sunday with the home regular season finale vs. West Virginia (5-4-7, 2-1-4) at 1 p.m. CT. The match serves as Senior Day, honoring Amos and fellow super seniors Taylor Hunter and Makala Thomas.
Tickets for Sunday's match are still available via SoonerSports.com/tickets and the match can be seen via ESPN+.
