MANHATTAN, Kan. — The Oklahoma soccer team dropped a 2-1 match to Kansas State on Sunday in Manhattan, Kan.
The match was physical from start to finish with each team committing 10 fouls, including a combined three yellow cards across both teams.
The Sooners (7-5-3, 2-3-1) held the shot advantage on the day with 15 to K-State's 11 but the Wildcats (6-8-2, 2-4-1) were able to net goals in the first and second halves to edge out OU.
Sophomore Bailey Wesco provided OU a spark off the bench, scoring her second goal of the season in the 81st minute.
After a fast start from both teams in the first half, KSU was able to take advantage of an attempted clearance by the Sooners and score in the 43rd minute. Adah Anderson found Sophia Harlan who was able to score from three yards out.
In the second 45, the Sooners were the aggressor, firing nine shots to KSU's three. Senior Emma Hawkins nearly found the equalizer in the 55th minute off a header from sophomore Leonie Weber's corner kick. Hawkins went up and headed the ball off the left post and out.
K-State went up a pair in the 81st minute on a goal outside the 18-yard box from Caylee Thornhill.
Wesco and the Sooners quickly countered with a goal of their own in the 81st minute. On a scrum inside the box, freshman Morganne Eikelbarner put a ball in the air that found Wesco's left foot who was able to sneak it under the KSU keeper and into the back of the net.
OU pressed for an equalizer in the final 10 minutes with shots from freshmen Alexis Washington and Hadley Murrell but couldn't even the match up as the clock hit 90:00.
The Sooners put seven of their 15 shots on goal to lead the SOG category 7-5 over KSU.
Starting in goal for the first time in nine games, OU senior Makinzie Short made three saves.
Nine Sooners took a shot in the match, led by senior Bri Amos' three looks and two SOG.
