NORMAN - Oklahoma wrestling returns to the mat at the Virginia Duals in Hampton, Va., after over a month away from competition.
It is the 41st edition of the dual-meet style tournament that features two collegiate and three high school divisions with the Sooners competing in the "National College" bracket along with five other Division 1 programs.
Our Last Trip to the Virginia Duals
The Sooners most recently appeared at the Virginia Duals in 2019, coming away with two upset victories and a third-place finish.
The opening match of the tournament resulted in a loss to No. 16 Arizona State before OU rattled off three straight wins capped off by a 21-19 payback win over the Sun Devils in the third-place match. They took down No. 20 Lock Haven (23-12) and Old Dominion (27-14) along the way as well.
Dom Demas,
Justin Thomas,
Anthony Mantanona and
Jake Woodley all picked up wins in that tournament and will represent the Sooners again this weekend.
No Vacation in the Hamptons
This represents the Sooners 11th appearance in the Virginia Duals. The program holds a 31-18 (.633) record all-time in the prestigious tournament.
The 31 wins is tied for third most among participating teams with 11 or less appearances. Under Coach Rosselli, OU has finished second (2017), fourth (2018) and third (2019) in three trips to Hampton.
Scouting the Competition
LOCK HAVEN BALD EAGLES
The Bald Eagles are coming into the tournament off a 5th place finish at the David Lehman F&M Open with 165-pounder Ashton Eyler taking the title in his weight class. The team is 3-4 on the year in dual action with all three of their wins coming at the Messiah University Duals. They also have a two-point loss to Michigan State on their resume.
Oklahoma holds a 3-1 series lead all time against Lock Haven. The first match took place in 1974 and the teams last faced each other in the 2019 iteration of the Virginia Duals.
This will be Lock Haven's 19th time competing in the Virginia Duals, tied with Kent State for eighth most all-time. Holding a 34-32 record, the Bald Eagles sit in a tie for eighth most wins in tournament history with Oklahoma State and Virginia.
KENT STATE GOLDEN FLASHES
Kent State is 2-2 in dual competition this season, most recently earning a 30-6 road victory over Edinboro. Their two losses came at the hands of South Dakota State and Northern Illinois, both teams that the Sooners will face in the coming weeks.
The Flashes started their season with five tournament appearances, highlighted by 5th place finishes at the Navy Classic and the Clarion Open.
The Sooners first matched up against the Golden Flashes in 2019 at the Kent State Tri. Oklahoma won the dual 29-7 thanks to wins in eight of the ten bouts from the likes of
Tony Madrigal,
Dom Demas,
Jacob Butler,
Justin Thomas,
Anthony Mantanona,
Darrien Roberts and
Jake Woodley.
This will be Kent State's 19th appearance in the Virginia Duals where they have amassed a 40-34 record. The 40 wins are good for fourth most in tournament history.
VIRGINIA CAVALIERS
While not exactly on home turf this weekend, the Cavaliers are in familiar territory in Hampton. It is the program's 26th appearance at the Virginia Duals which is the third most of any team.
Their tournament record of 34-47 places the Cavaliers in a three-way tie for the eighth most wins in tournament history.
Virginia holds a 3-2 record on the season with a win over fellow Virginia Duals competitor Maryland. Their most recent action came in a 16-18 loss to Northwestern. Oklahoma has only faced Virginia once, coming away from the dual with a win in 1998.
MARYLAND TERRAPINS
Maryland possess a 3-3 record on the season with wins over Duke and Navy on the resume. Their last time on the mat resulted in a loss to No. 1 Penn State.
It will be the Terrapin's fifth appearance in the Virginia Duals, where they hold a 7-8 record.
The Sooners and the Terrapins have done battle on the mat six times and Oklahoma has won on all six occasions going back to 1960.
