Patrick Welch lead

OU in Second Entering Carmel Cup's Final Round

September 04, 2021 | Men's Golf

PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The Oklahoma men's golf team was one of two teams in the red Saturday at the Carmel Cup, posting a 5-under 355 to move into sole second at 6-under with 18 holes outstanding.

The seventh-ranked Sooners were led by Logan McAllister at Pebble Beach, as the senior fired a 69 (-3) for the second consecutive round to share second. McAllister, freshman Drew Goodman, redshirt senior Chris Gotterup and sophomore Stephen Campbell Jr. all own top-20 spots heading into Sunday's final round. The final round of the eight-team tournament at Pebble Beach Golf Links will tee off Sunday morning, with the Sooners going out at 10:10 CT.

"Our guys did a great job today as a group," head coach Ryan Hybl said. "Drew (Goodman) and Logan (McAllister) led the charge with big rounds for us. Pebble Beach is playing tougher than we normally see it and anything under-par is a good round. We played well enough today to give ourselves a chance tomorrow and for that we are excited about the opportunity that is in front of us."

McAllister's (-6, T2) six birdies powered the All-American to his 19th round in the 60s of his career and 11th of 2021. He will enter Sunday two strokes behind Georgia's Trent Phillips, who is the event's 36-hole leader.

Goodman (-2, T7) continued to impress in his first collegiate tournament, as the freshman's 69 on Saturday sent him into the top 10 against the most demanding field in college golf. His six birdies match McAllister for the most on the team.

Chris Gotterup (-1, T11) joined McAllister and Goodman in the red as the redshirt senior transfer owns a piece of 11th place after 36 holes. The All-American was once again vital for the Sooners on the back nine as he has sunk pars on the entire back of Pebble Beach in both rounds.

Campbell Jr. (E, T17) used a 74 (+2) Saturday to earn 17th as he heads into the final round of his college debut. The Richmond, Texas, product was even on the day before a double bogey on the iconic 18th dropped him to 2-over.

Patrick Welch (+3, T27) is hunting for the 14th top-20 placement of his career, and Blake Lorenz (+10, T44) wrapped up play on the Sooners' scorecard Saturday.

Hybl's team will look to claim its 38th top-three finish in the last four seasons Sunday as it holds a six-shot advantage over fourth-place Texas Tech. Oklahoma sits in front of four ranked teams but trails leaders No. 2 Oklahoma State by seven shots with one day left.
