PEBBLE BEACH, Calif. – The Oklahoma men's golf team opened its 2021-22 season Friday in the opening round of the Carmel Cup, firing a 1-under 359 in a six-count-five scoring format. The seventh-ranked Sooners sit in sixth place after 18 holes, just four shots behind day one leaders Georgia at the tournament hosted annually at the Pebble Beach Golf Links.

A trio of Oklahoma (-1, 359) golfers find themselves in contention after even-par or better rounds on Friday with Logan McAllister (-3, 69) sharing fourth, Stephen Campbell Jr. carding a 2-under 70 to grab ninth, and Chris Gotterup posting an even-par 72 to sit in 17th place.

"Pebble Beach was a great test today for our guys," head coach Ryan Hybl said. "It's always fun to see a new squad come out here and we have some new faces in the lineup. Logan and Stephen did a very nice job getting under par for us. We need ot be better tomorrow for sure, but not a bad start at all.

McAllister, a senior All-American, opened his campaign with three birdies in his first four holes to take the lead early at Pebble Beach. A string of pars on the front nine gave him first at the turn, but a pair of back-nine bogeys and birdies closed his day with a 69 to share fourth in one of the most challenging fields in golf. His round in the 60s marks the 18th of his career and 10th of 2021 dating back to the spring season.

Campbell Jr. (-2, T9) made his college debut on Friday and sunk a team-high six birdies, suitable for second most in the field. His opening-round score of 70 has him four shots off the lead at the Carmel Cup entering day two.

Redshirt-senior transfer Chris Gotterup opened his OU career with an even-par 72 Friday, collecting 10-straight birdies to close his round. The Little Silver, N.J., product was the 2019-20 Big Ten Player of the Year while at Rutgers and is seeking his 19th all-time top-20 finish.

Freshman Drew Goodman tallied a pair of double-bogeys and a bogey in his first collegiate round, but the Norman, Okla., product sunk four birdies to own a share of 20th at 1-over after 18 holes.

Wrapping up the Sooners' lineup were Patrick Welch (+3, T38) and Blake Lorenz (+5, T42), who battled up-and-down days for Oklahoma.

A staple of Hybl's teams, the Sooners were efficient on par-five holes, carding a 9-under on the day, the second-best mark at the tournament. The Sooners will go off at 9:10 a.m. Saturday with Arkansas, Vanderbilt and TCU.
