NORMAN — The University of Oklahoma soccer team lost a battle with Texas, 4-3, Sunday afternoon at John Crain Field.
The Sooners (4-7-1) stormed back from a 3-0 deficit to tie the match in the 84th minute courtesy of two goals from senior Megan Reilly (56', 69') and an own goal from Texas.
"I think today you saw the real Oklahoma," said OU head coach Mark Carr. "You didn't see it the other night and today you did. That's what we're capable of. A lot of sad hearts today, but I'm really proud, I mean we come back to tie the game, it says a lot about this team.
"We've done some of our best work in the last 72 hours. For them to come storming back like that and feel the energy and momentum swing towards us was incredible. At the same time we were naive in moments. There's moments we have to get better in but the character to come back from 3-0 is pretty incredible. If we can replicate this type of performance moving forward, I think things are going to flip for us."
The Horns (6-3-2) found the game-winner in the 88th minute on a quick counter attack that found the back post on an open net.
Reilly's two goals scored marked the first time this season that a Sooner has scored multiple goals in a match and the first brace of Reilly's career.
"Megan is a purist," continued Carr. "That free kicks she hits, she stays behind, she hits hundreds of those every week. She hits one perfect and it goes in. She's always in the right place at the right time. Great kid, she's a true Sooner. Breathes it, lives it, just so proud of her."
The senior's first goal came on a header in the 56th minute following a deep ball played from senior Erika Middleton and a touch pass from senior Bri Amos in the six-yard box.
Reilly capitalized again in the 69th minute, bending a free kick around the UT wall and past the keeper into the back right corner of the net.
The Sooners got the equalizer in the 84th minute on a Texas own goal as freshman Leonie Weber played a long ball into the UT box and on an attempt to clear, a Texas defender sent the ball past the end line.
The Sooners outshot the Longhorns in the second half, taking five shots to UT's four. Texas held the shot advantage in the game, 9-6, and corners, 3-2.
Reilly took three shots in the game, putting two past the keeper. Amos and freshmen Weber and Keera Melenhorst all had one look. Amos and Middleton recorded assists on Reilly's goal in the 56th minute. Senior keeper Nikki Panas made one save on the day.
The Sooners return to the pitch Friday evening in Morgantown, West Va., for a 6 p.m. CT match against No. 13 West Virginia (7-2-1). The game can be seen on Big 12 NOW on ESPN+.
