MORGANTOWN, W.Va. — The Oklahoma soccer team fell in a hard-fought battle at No. 12 West Virginia Saturday afternoon.
The Sooners played the first 60 minutes of the match even with the Mountaineers, holding off an explosive WVU attack, but a pair of second-half goals from the Mountaineers put OU on the wrong side of a 2-0 result.
"I thought we had a good performance today against a really tough team," head coach
Mark Carr said. "We executed our game plan to perfection for 60 minutes or so, but they've just got a lot of quality all over the field. We improved so much on all of the things we wanted to improve on from the Texas game, so I'm proud of our team for their fight and attitudes as we keep playing really competitive soccer."
The two sides traded blows in the first half as neither team created high-quality chances in the first 45 minutes. The Sooners tallied one shot before the break while WVU registered four, with two coming in the final five minutes.
Things began to open up more for WVU after the break, but redshirt senior goalkeeper
Nikki Panas was strong for the Sooners, collecting two saves early in the second half to keep the match scoreless. The game's pivotal moment came in the 64
th minute when Dilary Heredia-Beltran was able to sneak a shot past Panas and give WVU a 1-0 lead on the team's 12
th attempt of the day. WVU added a second goal in the 76
th minute to down Oklahoma 2-0.
"Overall, I was really pleased with how we limited WVU's dangerous chances," Carr said. "We did a lot of good things in defending our goal and defending the 18-yard box, and have really impvoed considerably over the last two weeks."
Cailey England,
Erika Yost,
Sheridan Michel and
Olivia Odle all logged 90 minutes for Oklahoma in the effort as the four rank inside the team's top five for minutes played this season.
Shalom Prince and freshman
Anna Perry both registered minutes in the second half, marking their fourth appearances of the year. Panas finished the afternoon with four saves, bringing her season total to 34.
The Sooners now return to Norman and begin prep for their Oct. 7 trip to Fort Worth where they'll take on No. 10 TCU.
"This team still has so much to play for and consistently improves," Carr added. "They're resilient and they stay in games with really good teams. We just have to be better in some moments in the final third. There has been a lot of growth in the first stretch of this conference season, and I know that we'll continue to work hard to improve."
