Seventeen Sooners Slated for Olympic Trials

NORMAN — Seventeen current or former OU track and field student-athletes are set to compete for spots at the 2021 Tokyo Olympic Games over the next 10 days.

The 17 Sooners, representing three different countries, will compete at their respective country's Olympic trials. Twelve American athletes will travel to Eugene, Ore., June 18-27, for U.S. Olympic Trials, while three British Sooners will compete on June 25-27 in Manchester and two Canadian Sooners will compete in Montreal on June 25.

Senior Essence Thomas is the first athlete set to compete, making her appearance in the women's triple jump. Thomas is ranked 12th among the 24 entries. The first round is scheduled for 8:15 p.m. CT on Friday, June 18, with the final competition at 7:55 p.m. on Sunday, June 20. All times listed below are in central time.

Former Sooner Abbabiya Simbassa will take the stage on Friday, competing in the men's 10,000 meters at 9:25 p.m. Simbassa graduated from OU in 2015.

Action will continue on the track with senior Camri Austin racing in the women's 100-meter hurdles. The three-round race begins at 7:04 p.m. on Saturday, June 19. Semifinal and final action are slated for Sunday, June 20, beginning at 8:03 p.m.

Redshirt junior Jelaani Davis will be competing for a spot in Tokyo in the men's triple jump. Davis is scheduled to compete at 7:15 p.m. on Saturday, June 19. Final action is scheduled for Monday, June 21, at 6:40 p.m.

Alumnus Brandon Doughty, who graduated in 2015, is slated to compete in the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase, beginning at 6:29 p.m. on Monday. The final of the event will be at 6:42 p.m. on Friday, June 25.

Tuesday and Wednesday will serve as off days for the athletes with action resuming on Thursday, June 24.

Senior Lauren Jones will get action started on Thursday, competing in the women's hammer throw. Jones is scheduled to compete in the qualifying round beginning at 3:25 p.m. The final round will take place on Saturday, June 26, at 6:05 p.m

A current and former Sooner will be competing in the women's shot put, Thursday at 3:30 p.m. Sophomore Payden Montana and alumnus Jessica Woodard, a 2018 graduate from OU, are scheduled to compete in the qualifying round with final action beginning at 10 p.m.

National runner-up Isaiah Levingston will take the track on Thursday at 9:32 p.m., competing in the men's 400-meter hurdles. Levingston enters competition ranked fifth. Semifinals and final action will take place Friday, June 25, at 5:18 p.m. and Saturday, June 26, at 8:35 p.m., respectively.

Simbassa will make his return to the track, this time competing in the men's 5,000 meters. The first round of the event will begin at 10:04 p.m.

Leya Buchanan, who graduated from OU in 2018 and now is competing for team Canada, will take the track for the women's 100-meter dash on Friday, June 25. The OU alumnus will be the first to compete on Friday at 11:30 a.m. CT.

Former Sooner Ama Pipi will get action started for the British Sooners, competing in the women's 400-meter dash at 12:55 p.m. on Friday. Pipi is a 2018 graduate.

Senior Rayvon Allen will kick things off for the USA Olympic Trials on Friday with the men's long jump. Allen is entering the event ranked in the top 10 of qualifiers. He will compete in the qualifying round at 3:30 p.m., with the final taking place on Sunday, June 27, at 6 p.m.

Friday's action will continue with redshirt junior Vernon Turner in the men's high jump. Turner will compete in the qualifying round at 5 p.m., with the final taking place Sunday, June 27, and 3:30 p.m.

Junior Madison Langley-Walker will take the track on Friday, competing in the women's 400-meter hurdles. Langley-Walker is slated to race in the first round at 5:35 p.m. Semifinal action will take place at 8:19 p.m. on Saturday, while the final race will be at 6:20 p.m. on Sunday, the last day of the trials.

Action in Montreal will continue with alumnus Baileh Simms. Simms, a 2017 graduate, is slated to compete in the women's long jump at 7:45 p.m.

Senior Edward Jeans and junior Bayley Campbell will close out action in Manchester, competing in the men's hammer throw at 4:30 a.m. CT on June 27.
