Sooners Maintain 2nd Place at NCAA Championship
May 30, 2021 | Men's Golf
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. ā The Oklahoma men's golf team advanced past the first cut at the NCAA Championship on Sunday after posting a 2-over 282 to close the championship's third round in second place.
The Sooners (2nd, +1) will enter Monday's final stroke-play round at the par-70 Grayhawk Golf Club with a 12-shot advantage over eighth-place. Following Monday's round, the top eight teams will advance to match play, where teams will be seeded and square off in a quarterfinal and semifinal match Tuesday and championship match Wednesday.
"We've been able to kind of re-create the same round every day so far, which has put us in a good spot," head coach Ryan Hybl said. "When you look at the par-five holes, that's a place that we've been really successful and today we just played them OK. I think we had some silly bogeys, in particular on No. 15, which is not a hard hole. We have to clean up some stuff and talk about a couple of different things before tomorrow."
Oklahoma, who entered the day in second and maintained the same spot, counted a 2-under on the two par-fives on Sunday, led by seniors Quade Cummins and Jonathan Brightwell, who both birdied the 11th and sit inside the top five of the individual race for the championship.
The All-American duo are two of four golfers in the 148-player field to post back-to-back-to-back rounds in the 60s at the championship, making Oklahoma the only school in the field to have two players accomplish the feat.
Cummins (T3, -5) has once again put himself into contention for his first collegiate win after posting a team-low 68 (-2) on Sunday, his 43rd all-time round in the 60s as a Sooner. The Weatherford, Okla., product has finished as the runner-up five times in college, including three times this season. He trails Oklahoma State's Bo Jin and Clemson's Turk Pettit by four and two shots, respectively.
"I've basically played the same round every single day," Cummins explained. "I've had some really good stretches of golf and then I've had some stretches where I've had to get up and down a lot. That trend didn't stop today, but I was lucky enough to make a couple of par putts that were outside looks at par and that kept my round going."
Playing in his 46th, and last, collegiate event the senior has locked up a spot inside the top 10 of the PGA Tour U rankings, giving him status as a professional following the championship. Despite a tight individual race, the Oklahoma leader is focused solely on the team battle.
"We have to clean some stuff up heading into tomorrow," Cummins added. "Double bogeys kill your score, so we have to clean that up. But overall, I think we're in a really good spot going into the final round of stroke play and everyone knows we're in a good spot, so hopefully we continue to play well and make a move for the No. 1 seed."
Jonathan Brightwell (T5, -4) has emerged as a contending threat for the individual national championship this week, posting an opening-round 68 followed by two 69s to share fifth heading into the final round. He powered home six birdies on Sunday, and his 13 total birdies are tied for third-most in the field.
Logan McAllister (T22, +3) continued his march into the red by firing an even-par 70 in the third round. The junior has improved his score by one stroke each day and owns a piece of 22nd as the field moves into Monday. McAllister, one of three OU starters playing in their first NCAA Championship, will look to notch the eighth top-20 finish of his breakout season in the final round.
Garett Reband (T123, +16) collected a 75 (+5) for the second straight round and shares 122nd after 54 holes.
Freshman Ben Lorenz (T67, +9) started his championship with back-to-back 71s but found trouble on the par-five fourth and carded a quadruple-bogey. He finished the day in a tie for 67th at 9-over after bouncing back with two birdies on the back nine.
The Sooners will have a chance to break records with another strong round on Monday. Any overall score lower than 289 (+9) on Monday would set a program record for low 72-hole team score. Both Cummins and Brightwell will have the opportunity to break Cummins' school 72-hole record of 277. Both records were set at the 2021 Big 12 Championship.
Oklahoma is scheduled to tee off starting at 1:28 CT off the first tee with Oklahoma State (1st, -12) and Arizona State (3rd, +2).
Spectators are permitted based on local/state guidelines, which are subject to change. It is requested that spectators wear masks and follow physical distancing protocols, including remaining at least 15 yards away from student-athletes, coaches and other team personnel.
