NORMAN – Three Sooners have earned a total of four All-Big 12 accolades, the conference announced on Tuesday.
Mason Beiler and
Alex Martinez were named to the singles second team, while Martinez and
Nathan Han earned second team honors in doubles. Additionally, Martinez secured the No. 3 position title by virtue of going undefeated at that spot.
The accolades are the first year-end honors for all three Sooners.
Beiler completed the Big 12 slate at 3-2 overall at the No. 2 spot. The junior earned all three of his wins in straight sets, including an upset of the No. 9 player in the nation during league play. Beiler finished the year at 12-9 in dual matches and was ranked as high as No. 69 in the nation in singles.
Martinez ran the table in Big 12 play, going 5-0 at the No. 3 line to claim the position title. With an undefeated Big 12 record, he became the first Sooner to finish the rigorous conference slate at 5-0 since Andrew Harris in 2015. The Spaniard compiled a 12-7 record on the season and finished out the year on a six-match winning streak.
Martinez and Han were tabbed to the doubles second team. The duo went 11-7 on the year and rose as high as No. 28 nationally in the ITA doubles rankings.
The Sooners completed the 2021 season in the second round of the NCAA Championships. OU will return to the court in the fall for tournament play.
