Sooners Dispatch Tulsa in Match Play

April 11, 2021 | Women's Golf

STILLWATER, Okla. –  The Oklahoma women's golf team used commanding wins from Libby Winans, Hannah Screen and Mikhaela Fortuna to dispatch the Tulsa Golden Hurricane on day one of match play at the Cowgirl Match Play Invitational.

The Sooners 3-1-1 victory got them off to a strong start at the two-day, round-robin match-play event at the par-72, 6,020-yard Stillwater Country Club. Veronique Drouin-Luttrell's squad will close its tournament with matches versus Texas Tech and No. 7 Oklahoma State on Monday.

"There were some really good matches out there today," Drouin-Luttrell said. "I'm proud of how our girls fought and never gave in. That type of mindset is what it takes to win matches, and we'll need more of that tomorrow if we want to win."

Hannah Screen was the first off the tee and first back into the clubhouse with a 2&1 win over Haley Greb. The London, England, product took a 2-up lead thru four before dropping Nos. 5 and 6 to move the match back to all square. Entering the back nine all tied up, Screen would turn on the jets, winning the 10th and 12th to secure a 2-up lead that she wouldn't surrender, knocking off Greb, 2&1, and giving Oklahoma its first match of the day.

Maria Fernanda Martinez battled Taylor Dobson early, taking the lead on the fourth hole, before dropping a set of holes to fall 5&3, evening the team battle at one apiece.

The remaining three Sooners would leave no doubt, as Libby Winans dominated Titita Loudtragulngam to deliver the second match of the day for Oklahoma. The junior opened the day by winning the first three holes and only dropped one hole before growing her lead to five on the 12th. A putt on the 15th ended the match in favor of Winans, 5&4.

The Sooner victory would be clinched by Mikhaela Fortuna, who took care of Lilly Thomas in 15 holes, 4&3. The Manila product blew the door open on the sixth hole when she went 4-up before dropping a pair of holes on Nos. 7 and 8. She would answer by winning on the 10th and 11th and sinking a putt on No. 15 to clinch the individual and team win.

The best match of the day was the final one, featuring Oklahoma senior Kaitlin Milligan and Tulsa's No.1-bag Lorena Tseng, who entered Sunday ranked 39th nationally. Milligan found herself in trouble thru 11, as the Norman product was three holes down. A furious comeback, highlighted by a 10-foot par putt on 18 allowed the Sooner to halve the match and send Oklahoma into the clubhouse with a 3-1-1 win over the Golden Hurricane.

The Sooners tee off at 8:30 on Monday morning on the first tee with Texas Tech. The matchup will be highlighted by a showdown featuring Oklahoma's Hannah Screen and Tech's Sofia Garcia, arnked 51st and 52nd, respectively.  Admission is free to Stillwater Country Club, and fans are welcome with social distancing encouraged.
